Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey, I just started playing Tau, was wondering if there were any helpful tips you guys could give me, and maybe give me a sample competitive army list. Thanks in advance!
Well for starters you should aim to build a 400 point army or so, just as your core army, and then expand on it. How many points worth of an army are you wanting exactly?
Well for starters, you have to have a battlesuit commander. Now which one you choose, 'O or 'El is entirely up to you and what your preference is, its quite a heated debate on the forums as to which one you do take. I usually field 2 'Els in my army. Give them targetting arrays and they will be hitting on the same as the 'O. Dont give them bodygaurds or anything, keep them as independant characters and they wont be targetted if you keep another squad closer. Plus the Jump shoot jump tactic will generally keep him away from harm.
Most people for elites generally field one or two squads of Crisis suits, plus a stealth squad, but again its all up to you. Everything has its uses if they are used correctly. Stealths are great horde hunters, while XV8s can be too, but most people use them for the anti MEQ purposes, or as tank hunters, depending how you configure them.
For the rest, it depends on what style army you want to play. Mech, hybrid etc. You need to have at least one squad of firewarriors anyways, so if you decide to play mech, have two squads in a warfish (basically a better equipped devilfish, smart missile system, multitracker etc). If you play hybrid, you could have 2 full squads of firewarriors, plus a squad of kroot and kroot hounds, to counter attack any assualt troops.
I beleive a must have unit is a squad of pathfinders, markerlights are your best friend, and will greatly enhance your overall effectiveness.
I generally dont think pirhannas are a good idea, not if your just starting anyways, though they are fast and can give out a bit of firepower, they are easily killed by mostly anything. Your better off investing in pathfinders, or gun drones, gun drones squads can be quite an awesome unit to use. I field two squads of them. They are good distraction units, the enemy can either deal with those annoying flying discs, wasting a turn of shooting at them, or they can leave them, and then the gun drones will get a chance to soften them up with pinning weapons.
Always take a Hammerhead or two. Your enemies will crap their pants at the sight of a railgun...well maybe...but anyways, hammerheads are highly mobile, excellent weaponry, rail gun solid shot and submunitions. Keep them on the move and they will stay alive longer.
Skyrays are also quite good, two markerlights, plus a bunch of seeker missiles, they come in handy when you need some extra fire support.
Anywho, I hope this helps you a little. Peace out

Own a Codex, read it, plan out your army in five hundred ish increments, buy said increments, play lots, win for the greater good.
Seroiusly though, some good tips go along these lines:
Tau are a highly mobile force, make as much use of that mobility as you can.
In terms of a sample army, there are a thousand sample armies in the forum we are posting in now. Check out a few of them and read to your hearts content.
I don't care what you say. I found a lightsaber in my garage and that makes me a Jedi
