Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm currently a lost and the damned and imperial guard player, but I was thinking of getting into tau; I'd really like to give try out an army that plays slightly similar to my previous two (none MEQ statline for the most part) though at the same time I really wanted more speed than I normally get.
I have the tau codex, four battlesuits, three box's of firewarriors, a piranha, a devilfish, and a hammerhead so far. What I'm wondering is how does a hybrid tau list differ from a mech tau list?
That and any suggestions for next buys?
(I've been testing out the various weapon systems on the suits, so I'll probably be able to figure out which of those I want to use.)
First off welcome to Tau forums, glad to have you here.
Mech lists and Hybrid lists are terms that get thrown around a bit but they basically mean the following.
Mech: All firewarriors are mounted in devilfish, no static elements are taken like broadsides and sniperdrones.
Hybrid: Might have a combination of mounted and footslogging FW's, a mix of hammerhead tanks and Broadsides. Basically a combination of fast moving elements and static elements.
Static: No devilfish transports, lots of Broadsides, perhaps sniper drones.
The Mech list relies more on mobility and out manuevering the opponent, the static list relies on out shooting the opponent before they get to you (ala IG, but without the large numbers of Heavy weapons). The Hybrid list is somewhere in the middle of the two having both elements.
As for future buys, you can't go wrong with Stealths. I also like to add markerlights to my list through pathfinders of Skyrays. At least two hammerheads is generally considered a good idea. Proxy some units and try them out before you buy them. It saves a lot of money in the long run.
I don't care what you say. I found a lightsaber in my garage and that makes me a Jedi
And just while aussiedave mentions money and so forth, never buy Hammerheads. Always get the Skyray, as you receive all the parts for the three Tau tanks in the one box. Then it's a case of not gluing in the turret/Ray Wing/Devilfish Cupola so that you can swap the vehicles round should you not require one particular variety.
