Hello, I was curious if it was possible to field an army without using heavy support choices.
Also, how would you deal with enemy heavy support?
Can rending tyranids take out the heaviest support out there? I read somewhere on these forums that the only thing that could take out a monolith(whatever that is) was a str 10 weapon.
Anyway thanks for your input. I'm been thinking of starting up 40k and want to go tyranids. I like the idea of swarm and fast attack.
The Monolith is a skimmer and it requires a "6" to hit it in close combat.
Also, rending and some other things do NOT work on it, I think.
I would say going without venom cannon/barbed strangler carnifex(es) is not a wise move, nor is it even fluffy. Almost every Tyranid fluff entry shows a horde of lil gaunts guided by Tyranid warriors, led by Hive Tyrant(s) and towered over by lumbering Carnifexes, with occasional specialists tossed in for flavor.
Zoanthropes can do it too, but this becomes a risky proposition against Necron. The Necron army has a fantastic lack of long-range firepower, with all of it being relegated to destroyers and heavy destroyers (which are very expensive). As a result, the ability to sit back in some cover with a couple of VC/BS carnifexes allows you to rapidly take out the monolith and then screw with the necrons.
In GENERAL, this is the case. Against non-monolith vehicles you are much better off, but you still need to get close. Flying hive tyrants are decent, since monstrous creatures roll 2d6+S on vehicle penetration, but if the vehicle moved more than 6 ... well have fun hitting it, and you're only going to hit it on a 4+ even with specialists if it moved at all.
SOOO, yeah I wouldn't recommend it. What is your rationale for wanting to do this, though? Like, why do you ask the question? Tyranid Heavy Support vc/bs fexes and zoanthropes are about all we have to kill tanks, and zoanthropes - due to limited range and low T/W plus the need to take a psychic test and then roll with only 50/50 to hit odds - are not that reliable at it in missions where enemy heavy support is backboarding it.

I have nothing against using heavy support, my current plans include a sniper fex and flying hive tyrant to take out armor.
I have kind of a swarm mentality and was wanting to work in some gargoyles and flying warriors, considered dropping the fex to do it. The fex just seems like the best support unit for my future swarm and i thought i'd ask on the forums to see if there was another feasible way.
Thank for your input, guys, it makes a lot of sense.
