Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey everyone I just wanted to ask what everyone thought about rangers and their more expensive upgraded version, over the other cheeper troop choices. Just thinking about a city fight army would rangers be good ? Any tips and tactics would also help.
Thanks in advance.
Pathfinders are a solid choice. Thanks to the AP1 potential, they're a threat to anything that gets put in front of them.
I'm not sure I'd take an army of them in CoD, though. While some plunging fire and their 2+ cover save is nasty, they just don't have a decent rate of fire. Armies like Orks and nids will be able to suck up the casualties and overwhelm you, while anything with reasonably mobile flamers (or hellhounds) will rip you to pieces.
I'd be wary about taking more than 2-3 units in urban warfare, using units that are good at short range is very important, too.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone

IMO no, but that is because I'm spoiled by Kroot snipers that cost a 1/3 of a pathfinder. Sure snipers are great the extra ap help bonus what ever you want to call it does increase the odds of getting an ap 1 shot by 16% but I would always go with weight of fire and a high number of shots over the few good expensive ones.
Again I believe they aren't because I'm spoiled with 10 snipers for a 100 points.
Prey they don't take you alive
My Eldar army never leaves home without a squad of them.
Nights Justice Space Marines
Eldar Eth Kariel Craftworld
Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
They have never had a 2+, but they will always have a 3+.How often does your 100pt Kroot squad get 2+ cover saves though?
What do you mean by 2 out of 3 wounds are ap 1? Wouldn't it be 2 out of 5 hits are ap 1?

Hooray its not a poll!
Generally rangers aren't worth it but pathfinders are quite good in many kinds of armies. The only time you would lower pathfinders is in games of <750 where you desperately need the points for spirit stones on vehicles or something.
Pathfinders work best in squads of 5 or 6. Some people like the full 10 man but this is only really feasible if you have filled up all your heavy slots already as reapers and war walkers would be better for this kind of firepower.
Pathfinders are exceptional against terminators, storm bolters and assault cannons just can't kick them off! and you kill off a lot of points a turn. In games such as cleanse pathfinders work as a nice unit to stay back and hold your own tablequarter. The rest of your army (fast and mobile) runs off to claim the others and take the fight to the enemy.
I use mine to back up some striking scorpions and have a kind of infiltrating core, once I get the money kroot mercenaries will be added to this.
-Never put your pathfinders to close to the enemy (unless they're krootless tau), even if it means forfeiting the 4+ save.
Pathfinders mainly just add fire support to an army once the heavy slots are filled. Many players overlook them in favour of war walkers, reapers and the other big guns as they have greater firepower (and this is true). But when your heavies look like this:
Falcon, Wraithlord /w lance, wraithsword, 2-D-Cannons
And you need some much needed range support to eliminate threats the pathfinders are the ONLY thing we have. No matter how good or bad they may be they're basically essential for many kinds of armies.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Mmm. I suppose there is always vypers to add a bit of firepower. Mobile too.
I'd agree with the general statement that pathfinders are worth it and rangers probably aren't. In the armies where I use pathfinders I usually use too many of them though (3-4 6 man squads ) because I get carried away with them. It's very rare that they actually pin an enemy squad and even rarer for them to wipe out a squad but the damage they do does weaken the squads like grey knights and terminators considerably, maybe taking them below half strength etc and you can finish them off with another squad.
Kroot hunters are certainly great value but they lack armour piercing which is really necessary when fighting space marines and similar.

Generally, if you are going to take Rangers, you should upgrade them to Pathfinders. I can feasibly see 1-2 squads in an army, especially CoD - put them somewhere (the stratagem for feel no pain comes to mind..) and let them hold the objective while the rest of your army goes about killing things. Their killing power is increased when you need them to be - you hunt large targets, that AP1 will help. Generally, you don't want more than 5-10 snipers total to be shooting at large targets anyways, since they can usually take them down. Pathfinders fulfill this bit excellently.
Besides, the models are exquisite.
I personally don't care for pathfinders or rangers. A squad of 5 will only kill 1 or 2 models a turn. I laugh at them when I field my sisters. Any smart player won't bother shooting at them with anything but flamers and in cities of death they can easily be assaulted or made useless by lots of cover blocking LoS. I find them too expensive for their points against anything BUT terminators and big bugs, and then you can just take something else that can have multiple roles.
