What do you think of shining spears?,do you use them at all?
I don't use them at the moment, but I have been eying them for some time. I already use jetbikes and love how they play. My only issue is that they are fairly pricey and their spear only has a range of 6". They are more of an assault troop I guess since they will not be able to bounce out of your opponents range like the jetbikes can. The thing is, I do not think they have enough punch to be able to wipe out an entire unit without an autarch. I don't use them because I find other units perform perfectly fine for a cheaper cost. I will proxy them and let you know if I change my mind.
I use them, theyz iz da Schiz, yo (shame).
But really, with an Autarch they can wipe out 10 marines in a turn.
If you call it a Missile launcher, then it'll never hit anything.
100% of people who aren't Karmoon know Saraneth is invincible.
Actually, not too much. I use them in light vehicle lists, or against MEQ lists (of which there are a lot, granted). They tend towards expensive, and several things with a better cost/benefit ratio can be found in the FA section.
I regularly use spears in my mech army and they rock!
Just remember that they will never be able to do anything on their own... use them to mop up units that have withstood a decent amount of fire in the previous shooting phase, or use them to assault rear end tanks (or even front side: remember their laserlances have the lance rule)
- Just love that maki! -
I play regularly against a Tau player and have started to include Shining Spears in my army as a method of holding up his smaller long range units to allow the rest of my army to move forward with fewer casualties. I have yet to perfect this method, but it seems it should work well in theory. I don't know that Jetbikes would perform as well, as Spears can get Hit and Run. Thoughts?
I am planning to use them in support of my Autarch on a jetbike.
Currently he suffers from not having the protection of being inside/attached to a squad so I thought he'll do a bit better if he's rollin with a squad of SS's.
I find the Autarch does lots of damage by himself so I can only imagine that a squad would be devastating if used correctly. Only thing is that they are pricey...
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Shining spears are a great sledgehammer assault unit. Wait for an opportune moment, and strike with lightning-quick fury.
A squad of spears with exarch is capable of inflicting incredible amounts of hurt on an opponent, but only when they are used in combination with other units.
A common theme among the eldar is that no unit is an island. And the Spears are no exception. Often, my spears dont see combat until turn 3 or 4. Hugging and bouncing from terrain to terrain, until I can pounce into combat. shortly after my dire avengers have softened the unit up
I like the Spears, but the tend to work best when combined with a force that can capitalize on their speed. My "Speed is Life" force has nothing that moves slower than 12" (unless in a transport).
* "I'm Significant!" -screamed the dust speck
* "Call me old fashioned, but an evil ascension to power just isn't the same without someone chanting faux Latin in the background."
Just a note, Ive been using Shinning spears often lately and they are great at taking out enemy flanks or heavy support. I have done it either way with the Autarch and without. Lately I prefer having 2 Farseers instead of an Autarch (Doom x2=pwn). But like it has been said before of Eldar armies no unit is an island.
A vanilla squad of 5 is 170 points. For that much, I could get a 6-strong Harlie squad with a Shadowseer, all with kisses, and still have points left over. Coupled with the fact that you only get one turn of power-weapons, no +1 attack from pistol/weapon, and when they are in the open, they will be torn to shreds, I haven't found them to be too survivable.
