...and I was just wondering what everyone's advise would be.
I'm fairly new to 40K, and I was in the middle of figuring out the perfect 750pt Witch Hunter Army, when after deliberating with that, figured out it's really tough to use them in low point armies. Plus all those metal models... so expensive! So I figured I'd look further.
The Eldar models look fantastic and the aspects intrigue me, so I was hoping all you nice people out there might give me a starting point.
I've gone out and grabbed the codex, and I noticed that there are a load of options for troops. So, what is best? Guardians or Dire Avengers? And does anyone actually use jet bikes as a troop option?
I haven't read much into the codex just yet, so bare with me
Thanks in advance for helping me out!
The Eldar are very fun to use. i use jetbikes fairly hevily in my army as it is saim hann and they pretty much only use the fast stuff. but i like to use guardians over dire avengers because you can have upto 20 in a squad making more for points and then you can upgrade them to be storm guardians which in my opinion are very cool models.
my advice, go for what you like best!

Eldar are a lot of fun!
There are a fair amount of plastics available, but by far the best value is to buy second-hand models in bulk at an auction site. I know they have a trading site here at LO, and there is, of course, ebay.
I would start off with an HQ, for me I prefer Farseers, and then a couple of squads of troops and a CC squad.
I'd say double up on some dire avengers and get a squad of scorpions. That is very general purpose and a good place to start. To flesh out I'd get a wave serpent, some guardian jetbikes and a wraithlord. Again, very general purpose and will get you practice with the different styles of play from the eldar list.
There is a thread a few months old titled "Cardinal rules for new commanders" or something close that that offers pointers. Also, check out the tacticas elsewhere on LO.
For me, my advice is always field maxed out squads (since eldar are one of the few lists that still have to adhere to psychology rules); never send a squad to do something alone (eldar are too fragile if you don't kill your targets completely); learn how to use your speed.
Everyone talks about eldar speed like its a miracle...well, since eldar guns are relatively short ranged its not. You have to be able to use it to exploit cover etc.
Good luck! Eldar and orks are the two list that are the most fun in my humble opinion.
"Orcs are what happens when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grow old and bitter."
Welcome to the eldar!
As everyone else has stated - Eldar armies are quite fun to play and also have a serious tactical element to them that is missing in a lot of other armies (cough*TAU*cough) that requier you to think a lot more about troop placement and movement etc.
Personally I prefer Dire Avengers over guardians. For a couple of reasons:
A) I play Biel Tan - large amounts of Aspect Warriors = DA are the obvious troop choice
Bladestorm and 2 shuricats. Ploughing out 32 shots from 10 guys with BS4 is awesome. Doubly so if guided. Triply so if target is Doomed.
C) There blue and shiny and oh so much better models than the guardians.
Okay, so the last one doesn't really count.
As for starting - Farseers are a good solid HQ choice and useful in nearly any situation.
As for aspects - Fire Dragons and Banshees are a good mix for Elite choices. Although Banshees can be replaced by Scorps who have better armour and more attacks, but are slower. Dark Reapers are also handy against power armoured opponents but they are quite exy.
Troops I would recomend a unit of Dire Avengers and pathfinders to start with - gives you some good options to sound out what style of play is for you. Jetbike are handy, but not in squads of 3.
Fast Attack I would say Hawks are a very good option, especially against mechanised opponents or horde infantry. Vypers work well too.
Heavy I suggest starting with war walkers - 2 with 4 scatter lasers lay down an impressive amount of firepower and can kill light vehicles with ease. A falcon is also worth looking at - the ability to take out tanks, be practically indestructable and transport a unit of aspect warriors is quite good
Welcome to Eldar!
Before you begin buying, you must frist decide how you like to play, e.g. ranged attack, assault based, lightning speed attacks, Mech, hit & run, etc. If you have no Idea then watch some people play and think on how you would do it and what things you liked.
As for the Guardian/Dire Avenger question, Dire avengers are better in ranged attack, but if you want long range then you would be better off sticking a misle launcher on a guardian heavy weapon platform. If you think you may like to use them in assault, storm guardians are far better. 16 Storm Guardians with 2 Flamers and a Warlock with a Singing Spear and Enhance is truly a force to be reckoned with.
