Hello all, this is my first time posting here and I was looking for some help tactically against my friend who is a Dark Eldar player.
He runs your typical Raider/Warrior rush army with a couple nastly Talos thrown in for variety.
My army list for the battle is as follows(pretty much all the CW eldar I own):
Autarch w/ Power weapon, Fusion gun and Hawk wings
Farseer with Doom, Guide, Fortune, Mindwar and spirit stones
12 storm gaurdians w/ 2 flamers mounted in Wave Serpent with TL brightlances, spirit stones and vectored engines
10 Dire avengers w/ exarch using bladestorm and Diresword/pistol
6 Harlies(5 with kisses), one upgraded to Troupe Master with power weapon
6 Scorpions w/ Exarch using Biting Blade and Shadow Strike
5 Warp Spiders w/ Exarch using spinneret rifle and powerblades
I've never fought the Dark Eldar with CW Eldar before so this should prove to be a challenging battle. Any tips or criticism on how to improve my list would be greatly appreciated.
Whoa! Your farseer is WAY too expensive, give him only 1 or 2 powers. Your storm guardians would be better with a Warlock, but overall they will be completely ineffective against Dark Eldar. The dire avenger exarch is better with dual guns rather than the diresword. Pathfinders won't make their points against him and will never pin anything down. Your harlies and might have a shot if they can get the charge off, cause they are init 7 and should be able to get rid of their kill zone. Scorpions will hopefully be able to live with their better armor. I love warp spiders, you can even use them to take out his transports (armor 10 open topped). Watch out for splinter cannons, they are nasty and will tear you up.
Things to watch out for: Warriors will go simultaneously with your aspect warriors. They'll go before your guardians in close combat, which will hurt.
Shoot raiders. They're armor 10 all around and open-topped, so you've got a chance of knocking it down with almost any weapon in existence.
You pretty much HAVE to shoot his talos down. It's toughness 7, so only your harlequins and scorpions can hurt it in close combat (harlies on rend, and scorpions on sixes, which will still allow armor saves). Don't count on getting the charge on a skilled dark eldar player who's raider-based. He's effectively got a 20 inch or more charge range on most raider squads since they can disembark from an open-topped vehicle and charge.
Ravagers are long range, and they'll tear apart your heavy armor. 7/2 disintegrator blasts and 4/3 three shot bursts. Incidentally, a shadowseer is better than a troop master. Being hard to shoot is better than having a single power weapon instead of a rending weapon.
Don't get into close combat with wyches if you can avoid it. They'll die horribly to shooting, but pound for pound they'll take apart anything you've got in close combat. The 4+ invulnerable save along with denying extra attacks from extra close combat weapons will take its toll very quickly.
If he's using Incubi, he'll probably come after your Scorpions and Warp Spiders with them, because they're worth enough points to make the Incubi worth the investment. My advice would be to avoid getting into assault with them, if at all possible. They don't have FoF, so it's a little easier than avoiding assault with Wyches.
If you have to go into assault with the Taloi, use the Harlies. Even that won't be pleasant, though. Shooting them down may be a problem, too, since the only guns you have that are really up to the task are your Wave Serpent's Bright Lances and your Autarch's Fusion Blaster. If he only has one, you might be ok, if he has two, you could have some serious problems. Fortunately, the Talos, like the Incubi, are slow by DE standards.
Also, his Lord will probably have a Shadow Field, which will grant him an insane inv save. The best way to get rid of this piece of wargear is to subject him to as much low strength gunfire as possible. Unfortunately, if your opponent knows what he is doing, you won't get more than 1 turn (at best!) to shoot at the DE Lord; after that he'll be in assault, butchering everything he comes into contact with.
Thanks for all the tips, based on them and my own rethinking of the situation i've made some revisions to my list. Namely:
Falcon(kitted out) with Bright lance instead of Wave serpent
16 man gaurdian defender squad with Bright lance platform
I've been considering the Shadowseer over Troupe Master, but the extra 5 or so power sword attacks are tempting.
The pathfinders should hopefully be able to deal with his Talos at range, if not they may be able to take down a raider or two.
About to go call him to meet up, Battle report should soon follow.
*This is all coming from a DE player*
Actually, I would fear that storm guardian squad. A pair of flame templates will definitely hurt anything.
Don't bother with bright lances, scatter lasers and shurikan cannons are your best bet, fill the air with scything gunfire.
Pathfinders are good for killing talos, use them.
And for Khaines sake, SPACE YOUR UNITS! DON'T LET A MASSACRE ROLL ALLOW HIM TO ROLL UP A FLANK WITH ANY OF HIS CC SQUADS!
you should never do this against other opponents, against DE it is pointless
am not at all optimistic, a good DE rush army will take out your foot sloggers before you get anywhere, including the harleys, as the DE player above me said, the most lethal, if fact probabyl the only efective thing you have in your list is the stormies in a serpent
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Your original storm guardian squad with two flamers acuatlly have some merit. Two flamers will worry any DE player. But like with the defenders I would keep the squad small.
You must expect to lose any guardian squad that gets assaulted by DE. Keeping these squads small means that you can use them to screen, say a group of dire avengers. Let the DE assault the small guardian squad if he likes. They will likely be whiped out leaving the DE squad hanging.
If the radiance of a thousand suns
Were to burst at once into the sky,
That would be like the splendor of the Mighty One...
I am become Death,
The shatterer of Worlds.
Thankyou for posting as my list is VERY sim ilar to yours and my local DE player runs the same sort of army except with less raiders and more ravagers. you need big guns to destroy his vehicles and massed shurikan and template fire to destoy his troops, DE are fairly two-dimensional in that. Try to stay out of close combat if you can help it, HIS STUFF WILL OWN MOST OF YOURS IN CC! Other than that, good list and good luck.

ok lets do this in detail:pretty useless, can take out warriors but an Aarchon will eat him aliveAutarch w/ Power weapon, Fusion gun and Hawk wingsabsurdly expensive, trying to do too muchFarseer with Doom, Guide, Fortune, Mindwar and spirit stonesnice and powerfull, I would have been tempted to take 11 with a warlock12 storm gaurdians w/ 2 flamers mounted in Wave Serpent with TL brightlances, spirit stones and vectored engineshe will zoom up, leap out and shoot you or charge you, either way you are dead, with or without a shadow seer10 Dire avengers w/ exarch using bladestorm and Diresword/pistol
normally usefull, he will zoom up from outside your range, dismount and charge you, no blade storm just a good kicking for you6 Harlies(5 with kisses), one upgraded to Troupe Master with power weapon5 pathfindershmm squad needs to be bigger, almost powerfull enough to give him problems, but because the rest of the army lacks impact he can focus on this and compensate6 Scorpions w/ Exarch using Biting Blade and Shadow Strikeas per scorps5 Warp Spiders w/ Exarch using spinneret rifle and powerblades
Everything you have been told is a lie!
