Im sure you guys get alot of these (we get a lot on the DE fourm) but im thinking of starting 40k with my friend. He has recently gotten an eldar army and seems to like it sadly i too wanted to play eldar but alas i decided not to since i personaly think games arnt as fun if you are both using the same army( more importantly he bought the army before me ) so in retaliation i took a couple of his codexes(codi?) and ive taken a liking to both tau and dark angels(model wise and what i think they do tactics wise, i dont have the rulebook yet so i can only guess what these things do)
so what im asking here is
first are tau on a whole decent against space marines and eldar(i will be playing them the most)
second what would be a good starting army ie. what to buy(yes i read the beginers tactica)
lastly what kind of force are tau(they seem like woodelves in FB, mobile shooters) and are they fun to play/ is there a large amout of viable lists
thanks in advance
OK, as to your first question above. Yes and Yes against both Space Marines and Eldar. I'm a fairly new Tau player (though not new to 40K) and I've had a pretty good level of success against both. I've had more sucess against Eldar than SM (and I've been an Eldar player myself for quite some time) but the only Space Marine armies I've had particular trouble with are those with a lot of Fast Assault, eg. Flesh Tearers. I've also had problems againsty CSM, especially Iron Wariors, since I've never found an ideal counter (yet) to base-hugging indirect fire ordnance behind cover.
Question 2: You might wish to check out the following thread about starting Tau which was done onlya few weeks back:
Basically, you can go for a broad mix of an HQ, 1 Elite. 1 FA, 2 Troops and at least 1 HS in around 1,000pts - and you have a lot of choice too. Check out the Army Lists section at the sort of pointages you like to play, because lists are being posted up there regularly. There's also a thread running containing a poll about the best all-comers list at (I think) 1,500pts so you might want to keep an eye on that too for some ideas.
Thirdly, my main WHFB army is WEs and I wouldn't say Tau are much like them - they have great firepower but also have tremendous manouverability too. Personally, not to use the manouverability of Tau, and the benefits that a Devilfsih can get you (arguably the best Troop transport in the game), is failing to make best use of one of the Tau's greatest strengths.
All-in-all, Tau offer you tremendous flexibility and have sufficient firepower to take on anything, but don't be swayed by all of the fancy stuff they have on offer. Get the basics right first and start to develop your Army gradually as you get a feel for what you like or don't like and for what works well/doesn't work well for you. Accept the fact that Tau are not an easy army to get right from the outset so it will pay you to do your research first and don't be afraid to post up your preferred list asking for comments. You'll find that even a few comments can make a big difference to the effectiveness and hence your confidence - I certainly did and I'm now enjoying my Tau to a much greater degree than any of my previous Armies (which, ironically, also included Tau but I tried to do it my own way and gave up in frustration).
Once again, welcome, and don't be afraid of asking any questions - so you've certainly started off on the right foot. There's a lot of good and helpful experience out there that will directed your way if you do.

It's very possible to have a fast moving-shooting army. Tau can be played a number of ways. Either very mobile (XV8 'Crisis' Suits zipping around and mobile Hammerheads giving support), or very static (firing lines of Fire Warriors, lots of Markerlights, and Rail weapons from HH, Pathfinders, and Drones).
We also have lots of AP2/3/4 for Space Marines/Eldar. 'Crisis' Suits can adapt to almost any situation.
5+ \ 0 \ 0 - 3'000+ Pts - Dal'yth Sept
0 \ 0 \ 0 - Work In Progress - Hive Fleet Hammerhead
0 \ 0 \ 0 - WIP
Victory \ Draw \ Defeat
Credit to Legionnaire for the bars.
Good buys to start a tau army are the battleforce, a skyray (as you get parts for the hammerhead aswel) and an xv8
BEN DIESEL FTW!!!
