My fellow Tyranid Generals, may I Ask a question to the Hive Mind?
Tough luck I'm going to anyway.
In combat patrols do I need Synapse? The rulebook states that I don't (although it was a Chaos General who told me), but The Emperors Champion (a Templars Player) said that 'Nids are to effecient without Synapse and Should have it in combat patrols, also that whats in the rulebook is over rided by whats in the codex, the synapse rule for 'nids is what I mean.
Do I need Synapse, O mighty hive mind?:rofl
Stupid people do stupid things
Smart people outsmart each other
And I... Play guitar and write folk songs
this should suffice alone but still
here's why . are you fielding gaunts ? that nice cannot fodder every high powered shooter hates ?
they need synapse
anything that doesn't have ld 10 should have synapse.
ever tried morale tests on ld 4 ? you will fail. trust me on this one.
also, you're immune to insta death.
just get a pack 'o warriors and you're set.

wundagore, I think he was asking the question from a rules perspective=)
along the lines of "in combat patrol, do I suffer from instintive behavior?".
Short answer is that yes, you still suffer instinctive behavior. IIRC, NO you don't need to field an HQ though. So it is up to you, but unless you are fielding all GS, will be having some problems.
And since you need it, and the only kind you can take in combat patrol is warriors, you might as well take some.
My advice, take a squad or two with deathspitters and a barbed strangler, es, ts, and maybe either spinefists (cheap) or rending claws. That way, if you come across any tanks (say chimeras or orc killa cans), you can knock them down.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
It is not compulsery to take any synapse creature in Combat Patrol, but it does really help a lot. Your best bet is with warriors (also the only one ) for synapse, and give these guys something to shoot with. I use warriors with devourers and scything talons with toxin sacs and enhanced senses. they are quite cheap, and do their job quite well. I usually field 4 of them, sometimes 5.
Because warriors lack a good save, you will need to protect them in some way from enemy fire, because they will attract a hell lot of fire because they are probably the only synapse in your army. You could take some hormagants for this and use them to charge and blos LOS.
But the best thing, is to remeber, that every unit in a tyranid needs to work together to work (that was what your templar player meant maybe). If you field gaunts, you need synapse, else to go beserk and do stuff you really don't want them to be doing, like hiding in plain sight (getting Lurk in the open...).
But if you field genestealers, or to a somewhat lesser extend raveners or gargoyles, you probably don't need synapse.
My advise: Still take warriors, because of their fire support AND synapse

Ghark, your Chaos General buddy is probably mixing the rules for Kill-Team and Patrol... In KT you don't need Synapse as it has some special rules for Morale and Leadership, but in Patrol games you certainly do need Synapse if you want to keep Gaunts fighting fit! =) You don't have to take HQ for Patrols, but it certainly says nothing about not following your normal Codex rules like Synapse.
