Hi, im new to wh 40k and i've decided i want to play the eldar race. An Army of "specialists" was just what i wanted.
For an HQ choice i am not sure what to pick. Autarch or Farseer?
The autarch seems like a more hands on HQ that can fight along w/your troops. Is this true?
Any pro eldar players want to help me out?
I also can't decide what units to get first. Me and my friends are starting out small, so can anyone tell me what they think is good to go with first? Is it ok to just have striking scorpions and an HQ for a small game?
Heres the difference betwen them (generally):
The Autarch is more of a direct combat fighter. He'll give you that 'special ops' feel... as he is stands head and shoulders above the exarchs. He is also fairly easy to equip, and can have a great amount of mobility. He/ she will be the spearhead on your force, and rip the heart out of the enemy.
A Farseer, on the other hand, doesn't deal direct damage to an enemy (that is the hope generally... unless you have Mind War). He will boost your accuracy (Guide), strengthen your armour (Fortune) or tell your troops where to strike (Doom). The Farseer can play a greater role as a supporter of other units, and is therefore completely different from an Autarch.
For a starting army a squad of Dire Avengers will never be a bad choice, and then you can chose between a squad of Guardians, Jetbikes, Rangers, or another squad of Dire Avengers.
I just want to say that the autarch is really not designed to be a super killy character like marine chaplains or chaos lords. He has more of a support roll as well. Give him a warp pack and stick him with spiders for some extra CC goodness or give him a bike and laser lance and run him with spears to watch the boides fly though this is expensive.
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!
I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
Spears and warpies like ironangle has mentioned are the only real ways to put an autarch to good use. He doesnt do an enormous effect with him when i put him with my warpies, but since he can kill stuff and clear some of the killzone it's protecting your warpies in an indirect way.
With spears he's fantastic, on average him and a full squad of spears kills 9 marines, which is scary. Autarch + exarch 9 attacks hitting on 3's 6 hits 5 dead. Rest of spears 8 attacks 4 hits 4 dead. Absolutely deadly. Still they're a bullet magnet so they need to be hidden carefully otherwise your 350pt unit of doom will drop like flies as theyrre no tougher than your average marine. this is a reason i dont take them too often, as it is a huge investment and if the enemy has some fast stuff like tornados they are extremely hard to hide.
To start off 2 units of DA and a farseer wont fail you as those units fit into any list. Guardians got them nerf in this edition, DA are 10 times better, jetbikes i wouldnt recommend starting with as they take a while to get the hang of using them (i lost my first 6-7 games by huge margins). but if you want to take them make sure to read cheredanine's tactica. Rangers are specialised at killing monsters or 2+ armour saves, they're great on paper but never earn their points back.

id go with an autarch. i field both though. a seer with either doom, guide, or fortune to support my troops and an autarch to get stuck in. the autarch isnt a full out death machine but with a 12 inch move and fleet turn 1 assaults are a real possibility. and against anything short of marines or nids hell most likely make his points back in CC. If i had to pick one id say autarch, he suits a more aggressive style of play better.
The farseer vs Autarch discussion really boils down to your army list. If your going to be using units that could be devasting with the support of a farseer, weather it be doom or fortune, that is the way to go. as state autarchs are used normally in spears or spider squads. they are not a 1 man killing machine, but can up the effectiveness of a single unit dramticly. autarch are the least popular, so if your having to pick one to start out now, farseer would be the best choice. the best thing to do would be to design your ideal list, and work off that on what you want to use and what you should be purchasing.
So i see that the autarch is more for an aggresive style of play, which i was kind of looking for.
Lets say i had i autarch and a couple squads of dire avengers. Would it be a viable tactic to open up shooting on incoming hordes then charge with my DA and Autarch, or send in one squad or just the autarch in CC?
One of my friends is going to play tyranids so i was just looking for some way i won't get totally shredded up in CC.
I don't want to start out with getting jetbikes quite yet, they are kinda expensive points and money wise .
from my experience with combat and DAs, I would not recommend charging them unless you were going to be charged yourself the next turn and there is no way out of it (better to charge than be charged, no?). The DAs are a shooting unit, keep them shooting as often as possible. If you equip the exarch with the PW/SS and defend, then he can at least be a bit of a tarpit for the enemies harder hitting assault units, but you had damned well be prepared to take care of that unit with something strong and quick--IE Harliequins, Shining Spears, Banshees w/e.
