im new to warhammer and would like to use necrons as my first army. thing is i still dont have a full understanding of the game and dont know what to get. what works well for a smaller army?
This depends on how small. At 500pts, there is only one real choice: 1xLord w/RezOrb + 2 squads of 10xWarriors. As your army grows, Destroyers and Immortals would be excellent choices to expand with. 1 or 2 Necron Battleforce boxes and a Lord blister pack will get you started. The Battleforce boxes have Warriors, Scarabs, and Destroyers in it. Scarabs have their place in some army lists, so these boxes are a great deal.
As you play the hobby more and read these forums you'll get a better idea of what to purchase after these core units.
Above all else, buy a Rulebook and the Codex Necrons.

Well what i did when i started playing 40k i bought the battleforce and a necron lord. Then i added some more warriors since are the core unit of my army and then i expanded to immortals (i have 9 for the moment and looking to make them 10), to some more destroyers and heavy destroyers and last i bought a monolith.
Make a plan on how u want to use ur army and then take ur pick. Note that u must have at least 20 warriors (2 units of 10) and 1 lord to play the game.
I hope i helped u somehow
thank you for your suggestions.
i got a few games in with pathofskulls and hes toatally killing me with his grey knights. we recantly played a 750 point game cuase well i dont have much of an army and we were limited on time. he was fully loaded with spycannons and terminator armor. i was able to kill off bout half his army....those that didnt have the termanator army but in the end i hade to phase out. any pointers for a stratagy against grey knights?
full army list:
1 necron lord: res orb, lightning field
28 necron warriors
7 scarab swam
903 points for this basic and i could throw a few things on my lord to get to 1000 if needed but this is my basic. any help will be apreciated again
Lightning field is mainly for close combat necrons. Discard it and instead put nightmare shroud or solar pulse or instead use veil of darkness. This will help u avoid the close combat with one unit of ur warriors when this is the case. U will see how nice is the feeling when the other will come to you for CC with the smile up to his ears but u will just teleport 12'' away from them and unleash ur rapid fire tothem.
You did the right thing in starting with the Battleforce + Lord.
For lists up to 1K, id say you only really need the minimun Warrior numbers, i.e 2 units of 10.
The destoyers are fine as a unit of 3.
You could split the scarabs into 2 units, or keep them as one. It depends on the enemy really, but play around a little, see wht you like.
For now it is best to keep the Lord basic, just give him a ResOrb (and if you are facing Tau, dont even bother with that)
With that lot youll be looking at playing 750pt games (ish)
To expand from there, definitely look at getting an Immortal unit, 5-7 strong, to accompany your Lord. They also might benefit well if you add the Viel of Darkness to your Lord then.
Other units which can be very handy are Flayed Ones and Wraiths. A single wraith is pretty cheap, and can actually be pretty good if you use him right, same for a Small unit (4) of Infiltrating Flayed Ones
Once you begin to get above 1K, id definitely say get your hands on a Monolith, these things are simply amazing.
when i started i had the battle force too. i soon got a couple more destroyers and had fun with a squad of 5 i suggest you get more also be sure to give your scarabs disrupt. fields
so far there has be some very good advise hear is some more
units to stay away from are Phariahas , flayed ones ,tomb spiders, wraiths, just until you get a bigger army, when you can field a 2k army start getting these units
and the best way i have found to get models cheaply is E-Bay
