Hey guys ! After a lengthy absence from gaming tables and forums, I'm back...
Now, I want to add a Shining Spear unit to my Eldar armies, and I'm wondering about the weapon choice : should I just stick to the Spear, or switch to Power Weapon ?
I intend to field 4-5 Shining Spears, including Exarch with Hit & Run and a joining Autarch on Jetbike with Melta Gun and Power Weapon. I mostly play against MEQs...
The way I see the weapon choice for the Exarch is this :
1. it gives higher Strength and cancels armours,
2. ...but only on the charge; no benefit on the opponent's combat phase
3. now, thanks to Hit & Run, the Shining Spears should be charging probably two - three turns, maybe four turns in a battle
4. of course the Spear also gives some nice shooting capability, interesting because of the high BS of the Exarch; however that's only at very short range... And there's always the dilema "shall I shoot before charging...?"
Power Weapon :
1. always cancels armour saves
2. does not give any S bonus
3. does not shoot !
Now, I tend to go for the Power Weapon, because I like to increase the chance of inflicting some wounds during the enemy's turn. I can keep the unit engaged, then Hit & Run at the end of the enemy's combat phase. I do not take into account the Spear's shooting ability, as I think it will not be used often enough to make a difference...
What do you think ?

Personally I would go spear, the extra killing power of str 6 (im guessing you weren't talking about the star lance) i belive out ways the ability for the power weapon to continue to keep killing more effectivley. Shown below is the basic squad u were talking about, 4 spears plus exarch, i didnt include the Autarch or other varibles such as doom, or one of your guys dieing. You would leave the combat in his turn to charge in again.

numbers are dead MEQ
Hope I Helped
i didnt know that was going to happen basically
dead marines after 2 rounds of combat, exarch w/power weapon
dead marines after 2 round of combat, exarch w/lance
Thank you, Prince, most helpful ! I usually work out the maths too, but I guess I'm still a bit rusty after 6 months inactivity !!
yeah and i think he can still get the 1+ attacks for charging because of the pistol.
Prince, about the pistol, yes, it would give +1 Attack, but not only on the charge. That bonus would be for every combat phase. Now, you make me think about adding Mandiblasters (is that the proper name in English?) to the Autarch, to boost his Attacks...
Thanks for your comments, guys... I guess I'll make a more versatile Autarch conversion than I initially intended (two alternative heads, and alternative right arms : Spear and Fusion Gun...)
Autarch *insert name here*
Mandiblasters (yup, right name)
Also, i dont think you get the 2 CCW bonus on a bike, as it requires steering, could someone clarify that?
But also remember, vs vehicles the autarch has haywire grenades
For the exarc I would encourage you to up your lance to str 8.
First of all it notably increases your ability to take down enemy vehicles. Remember they all have the "lance" rule, so in a pinch you can try to down a land raider shooting.
It also gives you the ability to fight bigger tougher units when you have to.
But in my opinin the most important reason to upgrade is because it lets you one shot kill nasty T4 independent characters. This especially goes for MEQ leaders because they have a lower int than your exarc, and almost always have a number of attacks with a power weapon such that stopping them from getting to go on int five is HUGE!
