After my epic compromised XV8 thread I am interested to know what XV8 loadouts are actually popular.
I am talking about standard elite XV8's and teams with a team leader included. No Monats or HQ please.
I will start, I use:
Team 1: 2 x XV8 Deathrains
Twin linked Missile Pods, TA
Team leader has HW Target lock 116pts
Team 2: 2 x XV8 Deathrains
Twin linked Missile Pods, TA 106pts
I use these because they offer the best balance of cost and effectiveness for elite XV8's. I do not like the Fireknife because I do not like the compromises forced by using them, and I do not think Fusions work on Elte XV8's due to the short ranged nature of the weapon.
So lets see whats popular and whats not.
In 1500-2000 I use:
3x XV8 Deathrain (TL missle pod and TA) team with team leader equipt with target lock
these guys are my transport killers and medium range HQ fire support
2x XV8 Burning eye (TL plasma rifle and TA) team
these guys run up one board edge causing havok. sometimes I will deploy them differently against MEQ's
at 2500 points i will add a burning eye team leader to team 2 and they tend to hang around with my HQ
This set up for me gives me great accurate fire that I know will take out pretty much what it hits.
the burning eyes can suffer against GEQ's cause of their low shot count so I use them for taking out HQ's or getting angles on that pesky las cannon team.
I run a 6 man XV15 team as my 3rd elite slot. they tend to cause havoc and mayhem for the first few turns as they are usually right in the enemy lines from first or second turn.
2 Deathrains (TL missile pod and TA) with team leader and target lock 116
2 Fireknives (plasma, missile pod, multi) 124
The Deathrains pop transports, dreads, and whatever all else.
I've never had a problem with my Fireknives. They will usually work with my Fireknife 'el to make sure he can't be targeted and to add some more punch. The three of them will provide the finishing blows to squads of marines that my Firewarriors have softened up or that the Deathrains have caused to disembark.
I know you asked for people not to include HQ's and monats, but those choices might add context for why people chose their elite setups. For reference, I run a 97 point Fireknife 'el and a 97 point Helios 'el.
Pretty standard stuff.
Well I probably commit a cardinal tau sin by equiping my two elite suits with burst cannons along with thier plasma rifles. Reason being that I like to use the same core army each time and this gives me plenty of flexibility. Also my main opponent is a guard drop troops player so I don't really have to worry about low av veichles or armour 4 or less troops so these work fine for me.
Fun topic, might as well throw in my two bits.
Team one: 158
Vre, AFP, TLMP, HwMT, HwDC, 2x SD's
My favorite point about this element is its character.
Excels at kill swaths of swarms
Quite good at downing transports
Very good at knocking out marines
Has trouble dealing with really heavy infantry or TMC's
This unit does not just excel at one point but a multiple of areas making it a very viable element rather than the ever so prevalent FK. It does have trouble dealing with heavy infantry or TMC's but its mass volume of fire usually makes up for its lack of low AP weaponry.
Due to Israfel’s and Riki's never ending bickering I decided to give the DR a try, and I am very glad I did.
3x Flame DR's
Cheap *cough* (edit) *cough*
3 man team
I believe enough as been discussed about these guys, so I guess I am done.

Keep em coming people I want to know just what the trend is for the elite XV8.
At 1500 I like to run 2 Deathrain teams of 2.
When I play 2000pt games I add in a team of 3 Burning Eye battlesuits, who either drop in where they are needed or run up a board edge with my Commander ('El Helios build).
These serve me well and also being a Eldar player I'm used to having very specialised units that excel in one area at teh expense of others.
3 Twin-linked Plasma rifles, Targetting Array.
Team 2 is a solution to all the Terminators I have teleporting in around me.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
I love missile pods in all their glory!!!
I used to run 3 teams of 2 deathrains in my 2000 point list with one team having a Shas'Vre with the AFP in addition to the TL:MP. But now that I have moved my AFP over to my Shas'el(who also has TL:MP) I find I stick mainly to the 2 man deathrain teams with flamers for 94 points apiece.
If I want to change my list up somehwat I'll run firestorms or fireknives, but purely from a powergamer standpoint I like the cheap flamer equipped deathrains.
my most common combo is the most common and versatile combo
team leader with Bondage knife
but recently I have enjoyed this combo
3xTwin-Linked Plasma rifles
Team leader with Bondage knife
very good VS Marines and Necrons
