Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm new to these forums and Warhammer 40k. I decided to go with the Tyranids and as my main HQs unit, I was thinking about a Winged Hive Tyrant. I want to go for more of a close combat army, because I really like the look of all those scything claws and Genestealers.
I noticed Forgeworld has a winged tyrant model, but its confusing. It looks like it only has one weapon. Does it "scything wings" count as scything claws? Has anyone purchased this kit? Any opinions? If this kit is no good, what other suggestions can you guys give for a flying hive tyrant? Or aren't they really worth taking?
Thanks a bunch guys!
In my 2006 FW catalogue, it says that the Scything Talons are incorporated in the wings.
And yes, they are worth it. A flying Montrous Creature with 5 attacks is always welcome in a Tyranid army.
Be sure to give it at least one of the following upgrades:
-Adrenal Glands(WS and/or I)
-Extended Carapace instead of WF to keep it cheap

When life gives you anything, charge it with Genestealers.
Alarm clock? Genestealers.
Your boss? Genestealers.
The rednecks that cut in front of me at Wal-mart like I didn't have anything better to do than stand in line? Genestealers.
Winged Hive tyrants are very good and many enemies dread them, whichh is always a good sign. For a few ideas on various breeds of winged Hive tyrant inspect this link for both Hive tyrants and Carnifexes.

You can use the Balrog wings to give the Tyrant wings. They are amoung the best as they are life-like and good looking, much better than the plastic dragon wings in my opinion, the dragon wings don't look very good.
What do you guys reckon of the new high elf dragons wings? i can't find a good picture of the wings and my store hasn't put one together yet.
They look good quite similar t othe balrog, if not a bit too flat from the back of the box.
I would just prefer to have the dragon sitting around the house that i might be able to use as a bits or a wyrm or something (also it gets around the negative IP surrounding LotR models).
and while on the topic, has anyone used nazguls wyrm for a flyrant?
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!
Rock is cheese, Paper is just fine
WWP and other Dark Eldar how to
I thought about using the High Elf Dragon Wings but they look a little too much like dragon wings. I'm going to use the Balrog wigs mainly for the psychological factor.

ToxSacs essential for easier wounding against most common T.
WField ok, but if you know there'll be terrain around you can do without it... PsyScream can be a very nice and relatively cheap power, especially as it can help mopping up entire enemy units via Sweeping Advance! Particularly useful against Necrons, as Sweeping denies them their WBB rolls. ;Y
AG WS is a good general WS boost, but if you play lots against IG then ToxMsm is better for added kick... Combining the two is rarely necessary as there aren't that many extremely high WS units in the game and the Tyrant should do its best to avoid them as they're better dealt with via swamping Gaunts or 'Stealers.
ImpAtt is nice if you think your opponent will be feeding it Multiwounders.
I'd add that FlsHks are good, as you can't always choose to not engage enemy hiding in cover.
Also, many vouch for the 2x TL Devo, EnhSen, ToxSac Flyrant... Immense amount of shots and still pretty nasty in CC to boot!
For the original poster: Remember that you will need ranged firepower as not everything can be dealt with in CC. Vehicles particularly pose a threat to armies lacking ranged firepower, Skimmers being only the extreme end.
