Welcome to Librarium Online!
Vypers suck, paper-thin, Bolters can kill, yadda yadda. Okay, now that we've got that out of the way, has anyone run a Vyper squadron that is outfitted with Holofields, Vectored Engines, and Spirit Stones?
Yes, it is not an ideal setup... but if your goal is a theme army, do upgraded (& probably up-gunned) Vypers sound reasonably playable?
I wouldn't say a bunch of upgrades makes it themed. The presence of those units that fit the theme is the main thing - vypers, bikes, swooping hawks etc.
I wouldn't upgrade them unnecessarily - spirit stones might be worth a look if you're taking a lot of vypers, but the points you waste on holo-fields and vectored engines can buy you nearly three jetbikes.
I would say a big group of vypers supported by a large group of bikes is going to be more thematic than substantially upgraded vypers.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
The trick with the upgrades is their cost with respect to the rest of the unit. That is that you could have two "up gunned" vypers for the cost of one with all the upgrades.
Since vypers are open topped and usually only have the one "main" gun they're pretty vulnerable even with a re-roll. And even if the upgraded unit was twice as survivable it is still only putting out half the firepower as two.
The only situations where I can see adding all the upgrades being a good move are:
1. You're playing high point sam hain and you've already taken nine vypers, three falcons, and all the jetbikes/autarchs you want.
2. You're looking to stretch real life money further.
Well, you just have to ask yourself.
Whats more resilient, a Vyper /w holo-fields, spirit stones and vectored engines or 2 Vypers?
The pair of Vypers win everytime. If you already have 9 Vyper's then its best to keep upgrades to a minimum as well as you have to upgrade all or none. If you only upgrade some your opponent just shoots down the fragile, un-upgraded ones 1st and you get no real benefit. And upgrading 9 Vyper's with holo-fields takes a lot of points...

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Keep the vypers cheap, and be sure to have waveserpents or falcons etc on the table as well. That will do more to keep your vypers alive than any upgrade. I am very pleased with the results I get from my vypers with shuriken cannon . They are cheap, lightning fast, and lay down a lot of strength 6 shots.

What about upgrading one that is the closest to the enemy. The closest one is always the first one hit then goes to the next closest etc, this means that you could skimp on upgrading the other 2 and still see a bit of benefit.
still rather pontless, why bother? not sure I can consitently guarentee one stays closer either
Everything you have been told is a lie!
i like the idea of just putting on a cannon instead of the twin linded catapults, cheap and throws its effectiveness up a fair bit. aside from that the only thing that appeals to me is the scatter laser, gives 4 shots at 12 inches longer than the cannon on the chin
Ok fellows we have a difficult task, so we have to be more deadly than everyday.
Make mistakes and confuse the enemy - The Doctor
Tactics are nice but it is violence that wins the day.
I always upgrade the catapults, hence all my vyper models have the shrieker jetbike metal cannon
Everything you have been told is a lie!
a) 3 units of 1 Vyper each,
b) 1 unit of 3 ?
I assume you are looking at b), in reference to the Squadron rules on BGB p73.
Then I have a question : are you allowed to have different upgrades on the vehicles that make up a Vyper squadron ?
Until now I've interpreted the Vyper rules as a "no" on this issue, but now you make me doubt... The French wording in the codex is not really clear; I would translate it as "Each Vyper may have Vectored Engines for +Xpts,[list of ugrades goes on]" . It does not spell out that you can buy different upgrades for each vehicle in a squadron. But, on the other hand, it does not use the restrictive wording that applies for War Walkers : "The full squadron may be equiped with Spirit Stones for Xpts per vehicle" . So I'm not sure.
What do you guys say ?
