Welcome to Librarium Online!
Are Seeker missiles worth it? i was thinking of sending some points on them to finish my list. I was looking at having a piranha that scoots 24 inch forwards so i can put two seeker missiles into the side/rear of a vehicle.
it depends what else is in your army, do you need to be firing seekers into his side armour? have yo ugot enough Rail guns already? how mobile are you marker lights? how many do you have? etc etc
Everything you have been told is a lie!
The use you mentioned is probably one of the best uses for them (if your taking Piranhas anyway, I would not advise taking Piranhas JUST to use seekers). The facy that the Piranha can move 24" and still launch the Seekers can be useful as it can get good access to vulnerable side/rear armour.
Only thing is be careful where the Piranha ends up as they are fragile and destroyed easily.
I take a Skyray and find the Seekers very useful (I also take a Pathfinder squad as well).
THe other place you can put them is on Devilfish, as these tend to move forward anyway.
Last point is I tend to use mine on things like Dreads and low to mid range AV vehicles. Seekers tend to struggle against AV14 (though you can get lucky). The Seeker is much better against AV12 and below.
Edit: it is worth remembering that the cost for more than a couple of Seekers can add up fast and can result in other units being compromised. I would always advise spending the points on making the list as good as possible and then adding a few Seekers if any points are left. This is why I love the Skyray, you get 6 in the base cost anyway and mobile Markerlights.
yea but you only get 6 on the sky ray for the whole game so there gone turn by turn 3/4 unless im reading it wrong (2 marker lights a turn 2 missiles a turn) so 140 odd points for 2 mobile marker lights arnt good value compared to 60 points on other vehicals, esspecilly(spl)if there are pathfinders about.
Anyway, that's my opinion on this discussion. Seeker missiles aren't very worthwhile on most vehicles, with the only exception being on Pirhanas, but only if you already have both Pirhanas and Markerlights in your army. And the skyray is useful as a support unit, and it can fire its seekers if there isn't anything else to use the markerlights for.

I would support Riki's and Zengamer's views too. The Seeker is an expensive upgrade which once used is gone for the rest of the game. For the same points, you can add a Fire Warrior to an under-strength team and benefit from his shooting for as many turns as he stays alive. Or Crisis suits can be given other upgrades.
That is not to say that Seekers do not have their uses. They do, but IMHO they should be considered as a "well we've these points left over" filler when you have checked that your army could not benefit from the points in a more 'long-term' way than a One Shot Wonder. Cheredanine more or less said this in his post.

The ability to fire six seekers in one turn and potentially demolish the enemy armour is not to be sneezed at. However, to do such a thing does involve a fair few points in markerlights.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Yeah, Seeker missiles have kind of a "hidden" cost due to markerlights. If you have markerlights in your army already, using Seekers won't be a problem (you'll just have to free up some points).
I have 3 sniper teams in my main list and normally didn't take any Seeker missiles on anything until recently. I just took 4-5 Seekers in a game and having the extra bit of punch coming from out of nowhere (straight line from the carrying vehicle to the target) works wonders. However, for my army list it was very easy to work in the missiles. If you have a tight list already, freeing up enough point for markerlights and Seekers could be a big pain.
Love seekers mate. Their great for taking out enemy armor in a very serious way (launching all 6 Skyray missiles turn one makes people flinch).
Markerlights should never be considered a hidden cost. If your not taking them anyways your doing something wrong. Their such a powerfull item that complements our army so well theirs no logic whatsoever in not taking some. Seekers on the other hand are a luxury. Their not required but theirs always some points were you wish you had one.
