Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi. I am a CSM player but would like to start a secondary army of orks. I only really need it to be 500-750 pts for now as I'm still actively expanding my chaos marines, I just wanna mess around with the orks for small games and as my opponent is IG I also thought it would be fun to have the famed green horde crash against the lines of the IG. Anyways enough rambling and on to my question...
Do I really need everything that comes in the Ork Spearhead army box??? Of would I be better of just buying a battleforce and then picking up the Mek with SAG and maybe a couple buggies or something. I already have an older box of 16 Ork Boyz....so going with the battleforce would give me a total of 36, and I'd also be getting the bikes and trukk. In these small battles I can't see my opponent taking more than two pieces of armor max, one probably being a chimera if there is any kind of objective.
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Ok, first off let me state that with a Spearhead Box your total savings, compared to buying everything individually, is a whole $4! With the Battleforce your savings jump to $19.
Since you are starting off fairlysmall, and in the interest of saving money, I would say to go with a Battleforce and buy the Big Mek Seperately. With the Spearhead you really need 2 of them since 5 Tankbustas and 5 Burnas/Lootas isn't really enough and you need atleast double that for a decent sized squad. Plus, you get more Boyz in the Battleforce and that is really what you need. That along with the 16 you already have is a good start to a force. Would allow you to run 12 in the Trukk, including a Nob, and then 24 on foot, including Nob and special weapons, making use of all 36 Boyz and the Trukk. That right there starts you off with a 321 point army, which includes 2 Nobz with PKs, 34 Boyz and a Trukk, and doesn't even count special weapons or Trukk upgrades. Add in a SAG Mek and that brings you to 416 before other upgrades and puts you well on your way to a 500 point army!
You need boyz, be they slugga or shoota in variety. I'm not a big fan of the battleforces and spearheads, as they don't give you nearly enough of the basic unit of the army.
Although some may damn me for saying it, your first step is to go to ebay. I guarantee you, that at this very moment, you can find all the basic boyz you need to start your army, at around half the retail price or lower. Now, the catch is that they'll probably be the old fashioned plug and play boyz. You know, the ones with the axe, pistol and viking helmet? Yeah, my army is like 80% those guys. My army was also dirt cheap.
Ideally, you should probably get enough guys for at least one group of footsloggers and two trucks. Get a few rockets if you can find them, and every one of those teams needs a nob with a powerclaw. The trukk boyz should all be slugga boyz, but the footsloggers can be either type.
Yeah, that nob box is expensive, which is why I just searched on ebay for classic metal orc nobz and bosses. You wouldn't believe how many they released over the years, and most of them are unique enough to be played as a nob. If you don't like that idea, just use regular boyz and convert some claws out of spare parts. If nothing else, get the box of nobz. Nobz with powerklaws are the ork's answer to monstrous creatures, dreadnaughts, and terminators.
After that, you need fast attack. I'd find some buggies if you can, and since they were included in the original battleforce, again, you can find them dirt cheap on ebay. After getting them, convert them so that they have rockets, instead of big shootas. You can also use bikes, but those aren't cheap (both in points and $). I'd start with a few buggies, fielded individually, found on ebay.
The HQ choice is tricky, and should fit what you want with the army. If you're keeping it to 500-700 points, I'd go with either a regular warboss, marched with the footsloggers, or a big mek with a shokk attack gun. You might as well buy either yourself, and design them exactly the way you want. If you want additional close combat power, buy a warboss and give him a klaw. If you want ordnance, go for the big mek with the shokk gun. If you want to save money, go with the warboss, with a powerklaw, and attach him to a footslogging unit, instead of a nob.
For the elites, buy two of the new loota/tankbusta/mek packs. $40 for 10 figures may seem a tad pricy, but the secret is to use the legs, heads and bodies of a few extra boyz, and attach the extra pieces to them. For that price, and the cost of a few extra cheap slugga boyz, you've got 8 lootas, 8 burnas, and 2 meks. With a little conversion, those meks could also easily become either nobz, painboyz, or two more lootas or burnas, if you want them to be.
Given you're just starting, you probably don't need to worry too much about heavy choices, as they tend to require either a lot of conversion, points, and/or money. The exception is the looted vehicle, which isn't a bad choice if you can find some cheap. The secret, is to just keep an eye out for the cheapest, crummiest looking warhammer tank you can find. Keep your eyes open at auctions, or again on ebay. For $5-10, I bet you can find something that looks like it was destroyed and then patched back together. That's perfect.
1. Around 50 boyz (at least 22 slugga, and 8 for conversion )
ebay: $65 tops
2. Two trukks
ebay: $35 tops (although they will be the old variety, so it's up to you)
3. Two Warbuggies (do NOT buy these retail)
retail: $50 (rip off, don't do it, if need be, just do without them and use bikes instead)
ebay: $20 tops
4. Warboss (attach him to the footsloggers, instead of a nob, if you can't get a nob)
ebay: about the same
5. Two boxes of burnas/lootas (using 8 slugga boyz to convert 8 more figures, and use the two meks as nobz for the trukk boyz)
ebay: about the same
6. Two dirt cheap looted wagons
Anyway, that's what I'd do, and that'll be either $300-$320 retail, or $200 or less if through ebay. If nothing else, I'd definitely get the slugga boyz that way, if nothing else.
Want the battleforces? Want bikes? Then get two battle forces for $180, get another box of boyz for $22, a warboss for $17, and two boxes of lootas/burnas for $40.
This will give you 42 boyz, 6 bikes, 2 trukks, a warboss, 8 lootas, 8 burnas, and two converted nobz for the trukk boyz, for $259. Yeah, that looks good to me.
If you want more bikes, you can get a box of three and bring the total to 9, for $35, making the total $294.

I beg to differ. The Battleforce is a great buy, especially if you wanna do Speed Freaks. Don't forget that the Boyz Sprues will make you 10 boyz plus a nob. And the Biker sprue has plenty of "Nobby" bits.
Granted, I was able to get my Battleforces for only $68 each, and that was NOT on eBay. There are plenty of online places that can sell ya GW stuff 20% or more off...

I wasn't aware the new boyz came with parts for nobz. I'm really glad they do, as no army should be without them.
Yes, there's enough if you only do speed freaks, but not if you want to slog as well, and against anti-armor setups, you'll want to have that option.
40 boyz simply isn't enough, especially if you plan to convert some of them. You'll need at least 50, or more.
and with ork boys being even cheaper in the codex now than ever, stock up!
