The Monolith, A huge structure consisting of living metal, which may very well be the most intimidating model any of us have had to face or had the pleasure of feilding in a serious tournement, or mabe just a casual game. But when pur into perspective, how powerful, useful, and economical is a monolith in comparison to other units that could be fielded in its place. As a necron player I understand the importance of the units you pick, whether your a fan of the all powerful immortals, or the mass destroyer army, mabe the rare cc necron army, the question always arises, is the monolith worth its weight in gold, or is it just another 235 point one shot target. when considering phase out how do you put the lith over 13 warriors, roughly 5 destroyers, or even taking a few units out to feild a C'tan. Many people like argue that a competitive list isn't quite possible without at least one Monolith. So what does everyone think? To field or not to feild. that is the question.
In any game over 1K I always try to field my Lith. I dont know why, maybe the equivalent in Destroyers or Immortals would be better (Not warriors though, i always go min on them unless i need to fill points, they just suck comparatively)
But the sheer intimidation factor of the Lith makes it worth while. And also one of its greatest, generally over looked abilities, is tactical redeployment via teleportation.
Youll hear most people go on about its indestructibility, or its weapons, or allowing WBB rerolls, etc, etc.
Infact i think its best ability is to be able to DS, and then teleport a unit ( Not on necesarily waiting for rerolls of WBB, i often forgo that for a better tactical option) to get them in combat or nice and close with their guns.
In my experience, only the fact it draws ALOT fire and attention from my other units is good enough reason to use it. Also when you deep strike and fire d6 gauss fire to vehicles and squads around it, it might already get those points back. Also the terror element of having a monolith is good. None of the people in my gaming group like facing monolith. And since you only have 3 fast attack slots, you've probably used them in 1500pts game already anyways, so thinking about getting more destroyers would mean getting those "almost complete useless point sink" hdestroyers.
Here's something that seems to be overlooked when justifying a Monolith. The bloody Landraider costs more! The Monolith certainly doesn't have the offensive power of a LR but it more than makes up for that as a true support unit.
It bears repeating, the DS ability, Livining Metal, skimmer status, and overall intimidation factor are all useful. A Tau Rail-head is just as dangerous, if not moreso, to a LR as it is to a Monolith. Yet SM players still field their more expensive 14AV-on-all-sides monstrosity.
As far as its affects on PO, I subscribe to the following mentality: WBF.

Apart from what has already been covered I have seen one nasty monolith scene of carnage. The monolith is excellent for it deep strike abilty and be able to shoot ALL units within 6 of it so deep strike in on a guard fortified postion or a swarm of orks or something similar and most of those squads will take one hell of a beating!!!
Ha! Kore knows how I feel about the monolith. Considering the tactical flexibility it provides, in addition to its recycling ability (let alone its resilience and considerable quantity of gauss shot....nothing to be scoffed at) I don't see how this is even a question! It's the answer to all your problems! Fear phase? give 'em an extra armor save! Suck at cc? pull 'em out! need to cover that open field? give 'em a boost (or hide in its freaking shadow!).
It could not have any guns at all and it'd still be worth the tactical flexibility it affords, IMH(depressingly-often-disagreed-with)O.
De gustibus non est disputandum.

well I'm going to try to field a monolith in a 1K game it will cost me my 3 heavy destroyers and a wraith but against a assault army with Vindecator (Ultra marine) the recycle ability will hopefully prove it's worth. and the blast frome it's partical whip(e) will be nice against the 3+ armour save marines will let you all know how it went.
Heavy destroyers are almost always close to totally worthless so you shouldn't worry about not getting to use them. Monolith can be horrifying in small games, and I would never use it in under 1200 points, not because it'll cost me quite a bit of phase out but because most of armies won't have anything to deal with it in 1000 points or 750 points. It'd just be horribly unfair.
well people it was a solid victory! for my SM roommate that is . he used his vindecator to take out 8 warriors in 1 shot and when my monolith came it was only on the board for 2 turns becaue it was being taken out by a Assault marine and a tackticale sergeant with powerfists so unfortunatly i lost a lot of VP. but the lith made me able to take some warriors in to RF range and take out 3 assault marines (another 2 where allready gonne thanks to particale WHip) i also took out a rhino with the particale whip. but I don't know if the lith is worth it it cost me 3 destroyers 3 warriors and a wraith to fitt it in.

Also, your description is kind of hard to make out, but the monolith can't use the particle whip + flux arc in the same phase. It has the following options only:
- Teleport a unit + use Flux Arc, no particle whip
- Particle Whip, no flux or teleporting
