Has anyone tried running a Dark Eldar force in an Apocalypse game yet? I've been preferring my Nids because my gut feeling is that smaller raids are the DE metier, but I could put together 2500 points or so and give it a go. After all, that level of battle is an awful lot of slaves...
Any tricks or army builds that work well? Has anyone tried the datasheets?
To answer your question, no I dont play apocalypse and probably will not, at least with my dark eldar. I prefer to play games that I can win, where the odds are half way even, and where one unit can make a difference, as thats the level where most of the modern tournaments are on. Apoc tourneys wont be held for quite a while, at least not until all the rules and half way set.
Call me old fashioned, but I stick to the dark eldar way of thinking - never attack an enemy thats well prepared. Other 40k races have a big edge over dark eldar when it comes to apocalypse, and it can be seen from al perspectives ordnance, numbers, special rules and ect. The only thing that GW gave DE is the splinter force which can hide under a rock compared to thing like monolith phalanx, subteranian assault, wraith host and ect.
Our special rules are just something that GW gave us to show that they havent forgot about us, it was meant to get DE players to get into apocalypse and keep buying new models thus keep the money flowing. I am sure there will be chages when DE codex comes out in late 2008-9 but until than ... NO I wont play, after that ... Maybe I will.
P.S You can see how desperate they are getting - no more bit selling through the catalogue, selling 3/4th of a legitemate model formation encouraging us to buy another (second) box, to spend more money and force us to have more than we realy need. In fact, they have gotten so desperate that they already lost me as a customer.
A friend of mine plays Dark Eldar. He was kind of intrigued by the idea of playing a Dark Eldar Apocalypse army. Feeling left out of the fun of Apocalypse he has decided to take matters. More or less he has started designing his own Dark Eldar terror contraption thing. The basic idea behind it being that when certain worlds are particularity ripe for slaves, but well garrisoned ( or what have you) some times they would call upon sturdier then Raiders. What he came up with is something akin to the tripods from war of the worlds. Basically its a huge quick moving spider with a massive cage for slaves at the top.
Rheagar fought nobly
Rheagar fought valiantly
Rheagar fought honorably
And Rheagar died.
I find nothing scarier than ten raiders of wyches flank marching (or flank flying? ) and then getting right into combat. Plus, Raiders are surprisingly good at harassing Titans. They're fast enough to slip right by the void shield and then pop off a DL shot.
I figure bringing three quarters of my army in through the flank and the rest as flyers protects me from ordinance and the (killer) opponent shooting phase.
Don't even try shooty Dark Eldar. Get Agonisers. Get Punishers. Get in combat.
In the end, in Apocalypse, it doesn't really matter that we're T3 and 5+ armor.... about 99% of the Apoc guns will destroy you anyway, they're so powerful.
Greenbeard, the walker sounds excessively cool - reward your friend with a beverage of choice from me/us!
WraithGuardian, I share your frustration to some degree - the datasheets the DE got are far from inspiring (what was it, 'Titan hunters'? The one with three ravagers anyway. In my estimation you'd get to use their L33T special power once if you were lucky, and then they'd evaporate. Yay). But Darkspawn has a point: with deployment being how it is in Apoc, chances are you'd get EVERYTHING into assault on your first turn and enemy shooting becomes academic.
Thankyou for your replies.
I've played DE 3 times. Generally supplemented by other armies as i don't have enough to support me entirely. But what i have found is that DE are very powerful. We have a very strong hitting power and we can make combat very quickly where we are safe from the giant templates of dom that apoc is known for.
On datasheets, i agree titan hunters is pretty dodgy. In order to use it right you have to have a darklance equiped ravager which means it will die next turn, you can count on that!
But, the Splinter force! thats where it is at! come in first turn. Fire all your weapons. Return fire hits you on sixes. Ordenance weapons can't get you (no giant templates). Template weapons can't get you (no plague tannk shots) then next turn charge into combat. Damn it is powerful.
I have to say that i really dislike the ability of flank march. It is such a no brainer. Everybody uses it and you know why? Becuase it is easily the best power! It is good for every army and being able to come on from the boardedge stops your army from gettting blasted first turn! The only negative is ambush. but if someone takes that it is a real gamble because you might not take flank march and then it is a massive waste. But if they did take it and you did take flank march then your in a lot of trouble. It is just a make it or break it ability that is external to the game. Ok i'm done ranting. Just i don't like it!
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!
Rock is cheese, Paper is just fine
WWP and other Dark Eldar how to
Last night I finally completed a battleforce that I bought in November. How many points is that? Maybe 350 odd or so and Apocolypse is like 10 times more than that!! That is a lot of work. Still, I have enjoyed the down time making my first ever army.
I got a lot of stuff in New Year that still needs to be built up and painted: the DE lord, 4 Incubi, a Haemonculus, a ravager destined to be a raider, a second battleforce, 10 wyches and a set of scourge. At the time I was in the store getting that stuff, the GW rep pulled out a mass-combined pie plate while explaining Apocolypse to me. I think that ordnance marker could pretty effectively waste the contents of a battleforce in one fell swoop. My initial impression was, it would suck to a DE player in this kind of big gun game, but I'd like to give it a crack once I have expanded my Kabal to where I want it to be. First things first though, 500 points against Orks, sometime this month to get me blooded.
I haven't found the splinter force that great, at least in the battles I have played. Mostly because the force will draw a lot of fire and if it is hit it is likely that you will lose part of it. Also you can hold those units back until later in the battle and have them come of any table edge so they don't even have to wither and fire. Also later in the battle there are more juicy targets to attack.
