in 99 out of 100 cases I'd say get a hive tyrant. 2* tl devourers, toxin sacs, enhanced senses and you've got yourself a cheap (121p) very dangerous unit.

While my guy response is screaming tyrant, there are a few things you have to consider. The first is, will the tyrant actually be helpful, or will he just be a fire magnet. If your list only has one or two (depending on points) monsters the tyrant is likely to get shot to itty bitty nid parts before turn 3. Also, if your list already has 3 dakkafexes, a devilrant and 3 sniperfexes, it might be nice to drop a lictor or two behind enemy lines to take out big threats (like devastator squads or an all las all the time predator).

Basically, while the devilrant is always a safe bet, there are times when 2 lictors might actually be more worth it, so you have to think about what's in your list and if having two units to go hunting for small heavy weapons squads will help you.

I just want to say that 100 out of 100 times the tyrant will be more effcient. Two lictors can do some nice things, but the tyrant is better; The only exeption to this is going to be in escalation games where you need your reserve rolls to come quickly.

Bingo, which means basically 1 out of 3 tourney games, since most players will avoid escalation in friendly games (with exceptions, naturally).

Paul makes points that are certainly valid enough, but I think the general picture will be that you're going to get use from the Tyrant more often than the Lictor, and there are force organization selections to consider. I'm an enormous advocate of utilizing Tyranid list nature to build a 17 spot force chart wherever/whenever possible. There's no better HQ choice than Tyrant, and many better elite choices than Lictors.

And keep in mind, I'm not saying don't use the tyrant. In fact, I'm almost certain that the tyrant will be more useful in most cases. I'm just adding that little tiny voice pointing out that lictors, while difficult to use and fragile (I personally never could use them) do have a valid place in a list. Especially under certain circumstances (like a very low MC list, or a list with a some juicy targets for heavy weapons teams.

Are you talking about buying them, putting them in a list or just getting some for modelling or painting?

For gaming, as much of a fan of lictors as I am, if your list lacks a tyrant, get that first if it is a direct toss up. They arre very solid units as well as being sysnapse and will always be an effective part of the list. The lictor is a much more strategic unit IMO and is also a specialist, so if you aren't sure how you are going to use it, that's just another reason to get the tyrant. If you already have a tyrant though, I would think that lictors may be a better option. Personally, I think that if you can play them right, 2 lictors are going to be more effective than a non flying tyrant, since the first one is almost always flying.

I have used a lictor in 4 games. Out of those four, it actually did something once. It was really good thogh. It destroyed a basilisk and stunned another. I thought there were some rules about crewman for the Bassie though. He didnt say anything and just let them get hit. I vote tyrant btw. 8Y

tyrant hands down... right now my tyrant, carnifex and warriors encompass by anti-tank with venom cannons and the tyrant has guard so he usually ends up soaking up 1/2 the fire power of my enemy (usually eldar and orks). I'd only go for lictors if there are many heavy weapon squads, artillery units, and you're using escalation.
