Welcome to Librarium Online!
At the moment I have a 500 point force to play in a 5 turn, objective based campaign for Orks as follows (roughly)
Big Mek with Shock Gun
20 ish Shoota Boys with Nob
12 ish Slugga Boys with Nob in Trukk
3 x Warbikers
I'm hoping that will be a nice varied list. Would have liked to try out Warbuggies but finding it hard to obtain some at the moment as I refuse to pay like £10 per buggy for a 30 point unit!
But I was looking at Big Gunz. Now these range from 20-30 points and you can field up to 3 for one Heavy Support choice. Now points wise that is quite nice for a small game, but does anyone ever use them? To me using Guess range weapons is a recipe for bad luck, the Zzap guns are a bit overkill in small games and I'm not sure how good a Kannon is.
Does anyone have any 500 point lists that use non-standard units (i.e. not the normal setup)?
I would also like to note that the 40K Orks tactica thread that I erected in 40K In Progress Tacticas has only received a couple of guides at the moment. Come on everyone lets post some tactics in there!
For small games I would say stick with the Kannon simply for the flexability the dual statlines give you.
IMO the other two big gunz are for when you have a specific role you need your gunz to fill.
...just remember to give your grots some signs if they survive the game
...also, remember to abuse their BS3.
That's insanely accurate for an Ork unit 0_o
Wake. Rise. Destroy. Conquer.
We have done so once. We will do so again.
Yes, warbuggies are a ripoff when bought retail. I personally love them, but I've gotten them for $5-8 each on ebay, or in a battlebox starting set.
When it comes to bang for the buck, the new Loota sets are a good deal, especially if you have some extra boyz you can combine with the leftover burna parts to make burnas. Assuming you can convert another big mek out of parts, that's 2 elite choices for $20. Not too shabby.
I've never used big guns, but some people love them, so I'd say they're worth a try. Don't even buy big guns, just get a few grotts on ebay, and glue together some guns out of spare parts. That's what I'd do...in fact, I think I'll do that the next chance I have, and give them a try. ^_^

Played a 400 point game... brought 3x 2 kannons with some ammo runts... absolutely devestated everything my opponent had (Nids).
Brought 9 kannons in a thousand point battle, looked at my opponents Carnifex and noticed his 3+ save... killed him in one volley (After that they never showed up without a 2+ save).
Kannons are fun, but don't count on them doing anything... they are like an IG missile launcher on drugs, and nothing more. If you play smaller games and have some heavy slots open, by all means take kannons!
Chaos: 2/0/1, Eldar: 2/0/0, Imperial Guard: 2/0/1, New Ork: 12/0/0, Witchhunters: 2/0/0, Demonhunters: 2/0/1, Tyranids 1/0/1, Blood Angels 2/0/1
I'm very tempted now to get at least 2 if not 3 kannons now. The dual statline thing for 20 points is what wins it for me, not to mention I think grots are just plain funny but buying grots in bulk is WAY too expensive (£6 for 4 - come on).
Therefore I'm intrigued by your idea for converting gunz out of other bits. What ideas did you have in mind and where would you get the necessary parts?
Step two... make some kannons...
Here's my 3 scratch built kannons
(larger res here http://guild-extra.co.uk/40k/orks/He...ort/Kannon.jpg )
The one on the right is an old GW Chimera/Griffin morter, with tracks added, but the othrt 2 are all scratch built.
Wheels treads are from an IG tank (Leman/Chimera)
Gun barrels are Feltip pens
The rest are bits from my bitz box.....
Finally if i want cheap grot gunners, use the fantasy box set ...
(they also can make great grot riggers ... ammo runts, oilerz... etc)

Like the grots idea, the goblin box set should suit nicely. As for the kannons I may struggle a bit there as I don't have an extensive bits box - only the bits left over from my 2 battleforces.......which don't really include large kannons.
However due to 44 boyz (total orks from 2 battleforces) been turned into 2 slugga squads and 1 shoota squad it does leave me with 2 hand held rockitt launchas available. I had the amusing idea of mounting 2 side by side so the kannon looks like a cheap mock up job of multiple rockets! Says a lot for Grot engineering!
I'm pretty sure its the Mek's that build the big guns. The grots are just forced to man them.
