Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've never been fond of the escalation mission rule. Adds more randomness to a game that is already very random. The current league for our local game club has three missions that use the escalation rule. Due to my dislike of escalation I've never played an escalation mission with my nids.
Just curious to what others have to say for strategy. My list is fairly flexible. Bout the best strategy I've heard so far is hide out of LoS with my units until I get enough on the board to make a charge. But in the end, I really don't think that's going to work.

I also have a general lack of experience in this type of game, but from advice given to others I would recommend taking (depending on points values for hte battle) 2-3 lictors. The rerolls give you greater control and certaincy for your forces comming onto the board

With my assault forces comming in late and in a uncoordinated fasion, I usualy turtle looking for a draw/minor win. I had a game against deamonhunters once where I made all 8 on my reserve rolls on turn 2, and still 1/2 my army was never involved in the fight. My walking tyrant never got within 18 inches of any enimy models the whole game to use it's devs.
You can charge forward with what starts on the table, and hope the rest of your army can walk up fast enough to matter, but that usualy means his army walks on right into the fighting, while your army walks on in a position to do nothing, even with really good reserve rolls.
Every time i read the rules for escelation i realize that it was not written with nids in mind. Because of synaps unless you have alot of warriors your boned untill you get something to help keep controll of your bugs.
No fexes or Tyrant on turn 1 and I don't think that we can get zonathropes eather. The lictor seems to me to be the only saving grace here with the reroll.
Personaly I refuse to play an escalation game as i feel it is over balanced to some armies and hurts others. Its also horrably vague. It has an etc in the rules telling you what you can and can't put down on the board. Basic infantry could include anthing or exclude anything. To me that says only troop choices or it could mean anything that falls under the rules for infantry in the rule book.
At any rate, I would never play using it unless i had to for a tournament. Weather i was using my Tyranids or my Space Wolves. (Though i would say the rule favors SMs.)
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
I don't think anyone is a fan of escalation.
When I'm tourneying my nids, I take a brood or two of warriors as well as genies just in case escalation shows up in the match roster, so I have some synapse and effective troops on the table in turn 1. There's nothing more depressing than watching gaunts fall back off the board in turn 1 because they're out of synapse.
The varying definitions of which tyranid creatures count as 'troops' doesn't help either.
