hey guys, I used to play Imperial guard but they started getting old to me so I went and bought a small necron army on ebay to jumpstart me off. im fairly new with necrons and I was wondering if the necrons had any other units/special characters or any alternate lists like the imperial guard do to add your own "unique" flavor to your armies?
Nope, Necrons are a rather straight up "pay for what you get" army. The way a person builds their necron army is very much the furthest flavor will go.
The unofficial variant builds can give you a very unique feel.
-Standard list: Minimum warriors, two squads of destroyers, immortals, a monolith. Maybe some scarabs. Walk into the middle of the field and shoot the enemy into submission
Warrior Spam: Self explanatory, just fill up lots of troop slots with lots of warriors, effective to a point. Powerful with Monolith support
-Flying circus: (loved by some hated by others *looks at Pheonix and Gauss_Storm*) Take VoD and a large squad of immortals, teleport around and shoot things with them. This tactic costs en-total about 500pts so can be slapped on to an army
-Destroyer Spam: Fill up your FA slots with destroyers, HS with Heavy Destroyers, take a destroyer lord. Very high firepower, somewhat less survivable, and horrifically mobile.
-Wraithflight: 1-2 Squads of Wraiths (always max those) with a "Wraithlord"-(Lord -destroyer body -Res Orb -Phase Shifter -Warscythe) High speed high damage decent survivability.
-Fear: Conjunction of the Leadership effecting abilities of Flayed ones, Pariahs, The Deceiver and Nightmare Shroud. little bit trickier but effective if played correctly.
Personally I try and run a balanced list, I use Flying Circus along with destroyers, then throw in scarabs/wraiths and flayed ones. Wraithflight for higher point games. Mess around with different ideas and see what you like.
I keep hearing about some pylon thing what are those?
That's a super heavy stationary armament used in apocalypse.

Close Combat Crons! pretty much as mentioned above, recently ive come to love the army. Your opponant will generally be expecting to face a shooty list too.
2 Wraith units, DesLord, Scarabs, Flayed Ones, Pariahs and the Deceiver. Monolith or two make fantastic additions, and Spyders can be handy.
Not alot of Necron players are big on the Immortal spam, at just 1.5k I run
1 Lord w/res orb
2 x 10 warriors
3 x 9 Immortals
I find that destroyers at low point games work well but lower your phase out count by quite a bit, and Immortals are near par on the destroyers survivibilty and firepower and are harder to take out since there will be more models on the board.
can anyone tell me where I can get the info on the pylons and I heard something about this undying legion thing from IA apocalypse can anyone gimme a link to what these things might do?

The Pylon rules are on one of the IA books, not sure which exactly but it should tell you on the Forge World site. Not sure what you mean by the Undying Legion.
