I am somewhat new to the forum so if this is in the wrong spot let me know.
I have been playing Tau for about two years. I've learned alot but still have a way to go. However I am so bold as to have suggestions as to improving/ changing the army.
These have been the subject of entertaining discussions with my brother (A supremely evil Necron commander). So I thought it would be even more entertaining to bring the discussion onto the forum.
I will start off with my ideas. If you have things to say such as "Tau are broken already, they don't deserve anything else" etc. please feel free to keep them to yourself. This is for fun and will be for those of us who like to kick around such ideas.
From skulking on the Tau forums I know that many are of the opinion that Pathfinders are in serious need of tweaking as a unit. Here is what I think would work well.
Make the max unit size 12. With this change the requirement to bring the devilfish would seem like less of a waste as it would be full to capacity. We all know what a concern gas mileage is nowadays. Also It would give a unit that usually draws a great deal of fire more staying power. Or.........................................................................
You could just do away with the devilfish requirement. This would make alot of sense as they are scouts and the scout move would be wasted if they started off embarked on a Dfish. Conversely if they start off deployed on the table and the Dfish comes to scoop them up it would throw a serious monkey wrench into their effectiveness and the only weapons they have worth shooting are Heavy (ML, RR)
Give Pfinders BS 4. Other threads have discussed the idea of all Tau having BS 4 and it was a general consensus that it would be broken to do so. But on a small unit such as Pathfinders I doubt it would be a game shattering change, yet would make sense for a small unit whose shooting has to count, and is their only purpose.
My last suggestion for Pathfinders (and this would be tossing me the proverbial bone) would be to give them all photon and EMP grenades for 0 pts. This would at least allow them to slow down some possible assaults rather than giving assaulters extra movement for inevitably massacre-ing my poor scouts. The EMP would also give them a new role to play if any tanks should start annoying the commanding officer.
Moving on to the rest of the army:
Again this has been discussed elsewhere but, it just makes sense that battlesuts should have BS 4. They are elite veterans with all sorts of technology at their disposal. Yes I know the TA gives them the boost in BS but at the cost of a hardpoint. This means that they can either carry two weapons and shoot one or carry one plus another support system. Most of said support systems don't really coincide with the purpose of XV8's which is to be a mobile, tactical fire unit.
You could instead give the battlesuits an extra hardpoint. It would solve the above connundrum.
Or give them the ability to fire two weapons (MT) without having to purchase add'l support system. It makes sense to me that if you have a high tech robot it should be no sweat for it to fire two weapons. Cowboys did it in the old west. Picture two PR's at twelve inches!!!!!!
What do you all think of a Battlesuit in the fast attack category? There is one in all the other categories (except troops of course).
Here is the Juicy question. What ideas do you all have for new weaponry? I think there is a great opportunity for unique weapons for the Tau especially XV8's. I'd like to see an AP 3 weapon in the battlesuit armory.
I have a few more suggestions but have to get going. Besides, I want to see if this will go anywhere first.
Maybe I'm a stick in the mud, but I really like the way the tau codex plays right now.
Any BS changes would make the units, particularly the crisis suits, necessarily more expensive, and their cost seems just about right as of now compared to other armies. A mandatory 4th hardpoint (cries), add even more cost to the suit, and for what? The interesting thing about BS4 is that it separates the Team Leaders & Shas'vres from the regular newbie XV-8 pilots. I think that's great, from a fluff-standpoint. The interesting thing about only having 3 hardpoints it that it makes you think and choose carefully, and doesn't just hand you an answer on a stick. I think with the addition of 5th edition (whenever that comes), we'll be scrambling to get our lists nice & tight again, but as of today, we really don't need anything new to win. Perhaps new things for fluff is what you are after?
The ideas you raise about the pathfinders are all interesting, but I believe would require a points bump to compensate for their raised abilities. I would prefer a points decrease for each pathfinder, and leave the options the same. The devilfish, IMO, is necessary for fluff (they can't fleet or JSJ, so how do they get ahead of the army?), so I would never drop that. I wouldn't want an already expensive and fragile unit costing more. Perhaps make the pathfinder cost the same as the firewarrior and have a mandatory DF, but that might be too drastic? The idea of 12 in a unit is nice, though. I always thought that was a bit strange.
The one idea that did peak my interest was when you mentioned a battlesuit in the Fast Attack category for us battlesuit junkies (I have 35 myself), but I'm not sure what it would be like, nor am I sure it is entirely appropriate considering the drones are there. I think it would have to be a very small suit, but moving stealths to Fast Attack would make the list broken.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see:
3. options for the pirahna (Missile Pods, Rail Rifles, etc)
4. human allies like the kroot & vespid
5. a stealth suit commander (tons!)
6. more battlesuit types & options
All of these in a new official GW codex, but that would be more for fluff & fun reasons than gaming reasons. But the thing is, all of the things that I mentioned are in a FW-equivalent book(s), so the rules are already out there, they are just opponent's permission.

"Listen up you primitive screwheads ... see this ... this is my BOOM-stick!" - Ash
"I told you, it's not Pink! It's Light Red!" Donut on his new power-armor.
As for the codex well I think a bit more variation in unit choices, such as troops would be nice. I think the XV8 needs some tweaking as well and I did a thread a bit back about how compromised they are.
I am basically happy with Tau but as I said a bit more variation would be nice.

If there's not much to say then shut up.
As I said before this thread is for anyone who wants to contribute what they feel to be cool and interesting ideas (fluff or gamewise).
If nobody has anything to contribute then I will walk away from the screen with my tail between my legs. However it is not up to one person to decide that there's nothing to be said.
Hi, does any one wish that tau had at least one more alien ally that was really good in combat i know its a bit far fetched but if the tau had a squad equivilent to maybe the harliquins. This would make the tau unstopable or maybe crisis suits a bit better in close combat i mean they are bigger than most thing they fac. Well this is more of a dream to see the tau flawless not anything i expect to happen.
I think abit more fluff or named characters would be a good start. The Tau codex is wafer thin compared to other codices.
War is coming, arm your pets!
-Jump Infantry abilty
-Stats (except the Sv.)
-Nutron Blaster stats
-Its weapon should have the Kroot Rifle ability that gives the model an extra Atk.
-Reinforced Chitin (+1T)
Is it over the top?
Maybe, but Tau have ZERO (real) melee units, so it would be nice to have just one, but an awesome one at that.
Oh, and access to the TX-42 (I believe that’s its name?).
Actually vespid are a unit that need to be made more powerful. Best way to do that is to just drop them down to 12 points or so.
Crisis are already extremely powerful and advanced tau technology can already give them extra ballistic skill, I'm confused why the original poster has even asked for it.
Pathfinders are a little weak, again I think it's best if they cost 10pts instead of changing their stats.
The suggestions I most like are adding more variety. However there is no way to justify a different troops choice when you consider tau fluff.
