Its Elites for me because I use many strong Crisis squads in my armies.

Elites here too, i only have a small army right now and elites are my key to winning for now4 (atleast until i get some broadsides and pathfinders then i will be evenly balanced.
If you charge a bunker and die, its called being reckless, but if you charge the bunker and win, it's heroic!
On the Tau that i do have (1,000 pts) i tend to load on Heavy Support with an hammerhead and 3 broadsides, Tau heavy support is just too good to be left on the side...note that against horde armies i'm preaty much fu£$%^^
3 broadsides!!! you crazy fool!
I own 2 and feel kinda silly. I mean, if you go up against a deathwing army all inside land raiders, then yeah, thatll do the trick, but otherwise... Its 3 dead tanks (yeah, right) or 3 very, very dead infantry each turn, and after say, turn 2, the enemy shouldent have anything with an armor value left.
Needless to say, I usually field one broadside and one hammerhead. I tend to load up on elites, usually a 3 man crisis team and a maxed stealth team. And occaisnally a single crisis with TL fusion in case I run up against something really nasty.

Troops for me, with IG the more platoons you got(i got 4 now with 3 squads each) the better suited you are for taking on anything tanks, termis, hammerheads cant beat haveing a meltagun/plasmagun and a lascannon in one sqaud, you better watch guys, your in for some pain. Besides its dirt cheap pointwise. all those lasguns....

Heavy support, just because hammerheads and broadsides carry the most devestating firepower in the game, and are essential for many important ingame tactics.
I always play 2 Hammerheads... but I also always use all 3 Elite Spots... I love a Fireknife team (2), a tank hunting team (2), and a full compliment of Stealths.
Broadsides aren't bad against Horde Armies like Tyranids... because you don't need LOS for SMS And they guarentee dead tanks, but they are a 50/50 thing for me.
Saethiel: I don't really want to disagree with you on this subject (how could i <_< ) but when the armour is gone then the smart missiles would come in action at their short range opfuly as you said there would be no armour left .....
In retrospect i still think that 3 its wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much, specially if you take in account that most games i played with them was against an IG player with not one vehicle ....
I'd have to say elites.
mostly beause I only have 3 squads of firewarriors ( only 2 put together).
I may move more towards troops when I get some more built.

I would say that Troops are neccessary, especially for Tau. Tau need a lot of troops really. In a 1500pts army my friend has 48 Fire Warriors.
