So I'm new to nids and overwhelmed by the options. My main army is the Eldar, where my options are limited to one model per squad usually. I hate gluing changeable things like weapons, so I'm debating what to do about my gaunts. I love to mix up my list and surprise my opponents with different weapons and new things, that's where a lot of the fun of the game comes for me. I know I'm going to magnetize my Fex and warriors (and tyrant when I get one) but I'm wondering if anyone has magnetized their gaunts. I'm considering just pinning the arms and swapping them out that way to avoid using a billion magnets. Is this feasible (aside from being a lot of extra work)?
Ummm, well, if you find small enough magnets, I guess it's feasible, but that is going to be some really labor that I don't really see the point for. Why don't you just play a couple games proxying the gaunts and see what you like better? The real choices that I see in gaunts are spine gaunts or termagaunts, plus hormagaunts. Both of those usually come down to a preference choice between players, so you might just play a little and test the different configurations out.
If you do end up making them swapable, then I wouldn't suggest magnets, just too expensive. Putting pins in them would be best I think, just make sure you have 2 on each are in order to keep them from falling out or rotating easily.

Earlier this morning I was thinking more about this and I don't think I'm going to go through this process with all 100+ gaunts that I'm going to end up with. I'm probably going to go ahead and glue a couple of broods as spines and termas, and then make a small brood magnetic so I can round out my numbers as needed.
Well i never really bothered, nor will i bother to magnetize my gaunts personally. All they really are (at least to me) is fodder. I generally will run spinegaunts and that's about it, unless i decide to mix it up, which case I'd just use proxies of what i have and just let my opponent know before the match. But i mean its feasible...i think it would just be a pain. I still have to go through 7 or 8 more of my MC's to get them all magnetized. But back to topic...it would probably just be easier to pin them, at least i think so. Considering the amount of gaunts you'll be running which in turn =lots of money spent on magnets. Save yourself some cash and just pin em if you really want to.
hope this helps!
Never magnatized gaunts. IMHO if it's not an official tournament, it's easy enough to tell your opponents, "those spinegaunts are proxied termagaunts, is that ok?"
I feel your pain! I hate the idea of being stuck with only one set of options for my tyranids. I tricked out my canifex with magnets so I could alter its weapons load out as needed. I am in the process of doing so with my hive tyrant. The only problem is that it is a lot of extra work. The plastic body of the carnifex is hollow and requires painstaking care to drill holes for magnets. The hive tyrant is a bit easier to work with because the body is metal and the arms are mostly plastic. I used rare earth magnets, the kind you get at Radio Shack. As for the gaunts, I doubt you will be able to find magnets that will work for them because they are so small, my suggestion is to try pinning. Good Luck.
You can actually get magnets small enough for gaunt arms from ebay. You'll be able to pickup those and magnets for carnifex/tyrants pretty cheap. I purchased a stack of 100 for under $20.00USD. Shipping accounted for about 30% of that.
