Welcome to Librarium Online!
My son runs Chaos Space Marines. After years of his army trouncing my Imperial Guard, I am now developing a Necron army. I only have about 1300pts so far - Battalion Box, Destroyer Lord, Warrior box. Do I need Heavy Destroyers to deal with his Land Raider?
Limiting him to 1300 points might force him into leaving his Land Raider on the shelf. On the other hand, if he insists on bringing it, maybe the rest of his army will be easier to destroy.
Gauss will handily take care of all your horrible tank issues. Heavy Destroyers are, however, not a terrible choice for dealing with something as heavy as a land raider, being able to penetrate would help you along, does your son field terminators as well? If so then I'd say yes, take them. if not standard destroyers will give you more for your money in the long run.
What else are you dealing with besides a raider in his list?

With how 5th editions seems to be shaping up I'd say Heavy Destroyers are a very wise investment.
He does have termies but no obliterators. I'll probably pick up a few HD's the next time I'm at the store. Your advice gives me confidence in playtesting what I've got.
"You know what the chain of command is? It's a chain I go get and beat you with until you realize who's in command!"
Don't forget lords with warscythes.
Pop them on a destroyer body for some tank-hunting goodness
Nothing too heavy though. Their strength isn't that high.
Wake. Rise. Destroy. Conquer.
We have done so once. We will do so again.
