Its a nice forum here with many info and army lists. I want to know from all the greater good commanders that you also find the way of war from tau hard to play because close combat is a part of the game we cant accept ; ) I always play "reactive" it means move my troops as reaction on the movement of my opponent and shoot. My friend say: Tau are made to play agressive with flanking troops ( suits, stealth, hammerhead ) and dont worry to be assaulted iff you troops allready did their job. It will be a point i ll try next game.
But sometimes its frustrating to play with tau because W40k is made around close combat and if your army is engaged in close combat in turn 3 you are not able to do anything back except of rolling armour saves, leadership, etc. you wish to have a army at that moment that can knock back..... But after all if you win ore a draw it gives me a great feeling because it was hard working.

Haha, Onlainari is spot in, compaired to third order differential equations in your head, playing Tau is easy. But:
Certain armies have an "elitist" thing going in, there is a perception that one has to be an elite player to use them, notably Eldar and Tau. Please Observer I didnt say the perception is true, only that it exists
But I do think that both these armies allow a more adept general more oportunities to use his abilities
the difference between the way you play and the way your friend saays Tau should be played is nicely summed up by the patient hunter and killing blow styles of combat in the fluff, both are completely valid forms of use

I'd say that Tau is not as forgiving army to play as a Space Marine army, for example. That means that inexperienced Tau players, once they make a mistake, and you insert your favorite mistake here, will suffer bitter consequences while a mistake made by a Space Marine commander would have less consequences.
But that doesn't mean that Tau is any harder to play than Space Marines. Bottom line, between two players with the same experience, it will be fair game.
I would suggest that whilst 40K might be an easy game to play, it is not an easy game to play well, but I would not support the suggestion that Tau are easy to play. Tau are not easy to play, but once you've learned how to use Tau properly they can provide you with opportunities to beat nearly any 40K army - and I don't believe that many 40K armies can claim that. It is also true, as Cowboy said above, that Tau are considerably less forgiving than many other armies and it can be hard to recover from mistakes, even for veteran players.
In nutshell, I would suggest that Tau are certainly not an army for beginners but are an army for experienced players who like a challenge. If handled properly, which isn't a given under any circumstances, Tau have the potential of being virtually unbeatable, given the available combination of troop types and abilities.
I've found that if you use enough firepower - and Fire Warriors must be up there as one one of the most cost-effective basic "grunts" there are in 40K - then you can minimise the chances of being caught in HTH. If you do get caught in HTH then the chances are that you will lose, freakish against-all-odds defeats of Marines and Genestealers notwithstanding. But I've stopped both MEQ, GEQ and horde armies alike with massed pulse rifle fire and it's only the things like assault marines, deep-striking terminators (always a problem for any army) and things sneaking in from the base line (SW scouts and the new Orky Kommando special character) that can upset the apple-cart. Even if you do get caught, if you can minimise the damage by keeping other squads away from the doomed one, then you'll ameliorate your losses. The nightmare is if you have a battle line - as I now find myself doing more and more - and that line starts being rolled up from a flank.
The other option, of course, is to seize the initiative and keep your opponent on the back foot. If he (or she) is having to react to damage you're doing to his (or her) troops then you'll be causing serious disruption to their battle plan. But if you simply sit back and passively wait for an opponent to come to you then the doomsday clock is ticking towards midnight.
Mass your Fire Warriors, trust in your pulse rifles, and stop your opponents dead in their tracks, quite literally, before they get to the table centre-line. After all, if it worked at Rorke's Drift it really ought to work in 40K ... ... ... :party2:

I agree the reason that some people may find Tau hard to play is in their specilised roles.
What other army gives you so much customization over a unit? (crisis suits)
Because each unit has a specific purpose its not just a simple case (say for marine armys) if we can beat them in HTH then move forward and shoot and if we cant beat them stand and shoot.
Having gone from playing marines to playing Tau, the number of crushing defeats Ive suffered has increased but the ability to apply diffrent tactics has incread as well.

well to be an honest DH player I can say that a tau army would be very easy in comparison. mainly because tau have a truly filled out codex unlike DH which has more holes then my grey knights which have to foot slog towords a mobile tau force. So I think that we should say that hard needs to be relative to the player. But since tau can have a balanced list that can face everything just about. they aren't that hard. well maybe mech tau is hard to play against for me. But thats for a different place entirely so just study up on tactics of your own forces, your enemies, and try not to get corraled into a corner. the rest is up to the fickle dice gods.
The two armies I play are relatively up to date in comparison to others, but I would imagine the outdated armies would be most difficult to play (although could an outdated codex led to advantages?).
Even if 40k is an easy game and most armies are easy to use I would imagine having an outdated Codex would led to certain disadvantages.
I also agree with meh, Tau has a lot of choices and only a few are considered underperformers so, I am happy.
Tau are a good solid army but they have significant weaknesses such as a lack of low AP weaponry throughout the army, lack of customisation of troops, lack of flexibility in certain units, lack of an effective assault phase (we effectively have to win using two thirds of the game turns),; however they do have strengths, but only strengths that are effective through experience. Using mobility and the effective application of firepower to cripple the movement and return fire and assault of the opponent takes skill, as does knowing exactly how to deploy Tau forces (effective use of the infiltrate, fast attack choices and mobile elements). Tau are not a forgiving army, Marines will forgive mistakes (3+ SV and TGH4 helps a lot) Tau will bite you if you use em badly..
If you gave a beginner a decent Tau and Marine 1000pt list he would get a lot more success with the Marine list until he built up some experience.
No, they are not that hard to play. IMO: the most important things to remember with Tau are: be aggressive, stay mobile, and take advantage of and exploit terrain. The only difficult thing I find about playing Tau is the constant guess ranging you need to do
