I feel that it is perhaps the odd place to come, but I'll post this anyways, haha! I am curious, what units give your genestealers a hard time? I find when playing Tyranid armies that aren't MC-heavy, I am generally able to handle the majority of the army. I play Imperial Guard and Black Templars generally, and can shoot or kill in hand to hand most Tyranids. I, however, am just trounced time and time again by Genestealers.
What troops beat Genestealers in your experience? I can't imagine a unit in hand to hand that could possibly beat them with my own armies, and even in most armies in general. What gives your genestealers a hard time?
I run a very stealer heavy list so I'm just going to list off the units that I hate the most.
Landspeeder tornados (HB + AC = ouch)
Heavy bolter devastator squads
bladestorming dire avengers (especially when doom and guide are in play)
heavy support platoons with heavy bolters (noticing a theme?)
Russes with yup, you guessed it heavy bolters.
termies with assault cannons
pretty much anything that spits out a lot of Str 4+ ap 4- shots.
~2k of genestealery goodness
~1750points of terminator goodness
Dovie'andi se tovya sagain
more witty remarks to come.
I think some units in 40k are just not worth taking
My stealers dislike:
Ork boys - too many boyz, too many attacks. You kill a double handful in a mob and the other 20 just laugh and stomp you off the board. And those flamer buggies! Ouch!
Skimmers - Tau, both Eldars. I tend to run sniperfexes or zoanthropes in stealer lists to deal with these.
A peculiar one was a Spacewolves 13th Co list maximised for fenrisian(?) wolves - he had 50ish of them. These bad dogs were like super-hormagaunts with a scout move, and through superior speed were able to seize the initiative and overwhelm my broods piecemeal.
Heavy bolters and equivalent. I've found IG maxed out with heavy bolter teams on good firelanes to be a tough nut to crack too.
To give you another view of the situation every close combat specialist in the game (besides assault marines) will trounce genestealers. Harlies, wyches, banshees, orks in general, wraiths...will all chew through stealers. And I will agree that any skimmer will absolutely ruin their day.
I'd have to disagree there. Genestealers are one of the best cc units in the game. I believe they can beat most things on your list, with the exception of harlies, as long as they have an equal point value. Also, they tear through non cc units like butter, where as stuff like wyches really don't have the same destructive potential. To give you another view of the situation every close combat specialist in the game (besides assault marines) will trounce genestealers. The worst thing for stealers is heavy bolters. If fact that is probably one of the best all around weapons for taking out nids. With a long range, and the fact that you can put multiple heavy bolters on the field easily, it can really hit stealers hard. They just aren't that tough when getting shot at. Same goes for similar weapons such as the psycannon and assault cannon.
Keep them at range and they are fine to deal with. If they get into cc, I'd hurry up and just sacrifice that squad, back up where they can't charge you and then hit them once they are left in the open.

All for 2 less points than a 0-upgrades genestealer.
They're alright, and nasty gribbly and stuff, but they're exceedingly easy to kill, even guardsmen have an OK chance if they get a shot at fighting back. I'd rather have a bunch more gaunt wounds backed up by raveners.
In terms of what works well at killing them, bullets - plain and simple.
Make sure you give yourself tactically the opportunity to shoot at them, and then just plow them under with heavy barrages. Your Black Templars, especially if they have pfists and the like, can tackle anything else pretty easily if it gets in close.
Nids & Guard
GMail = MVBrandt
They flatout beat genestealers in CC for cost (and typically good old fashioned beating).
With a raider they are just as fast if not faster.
Lastly come in larger squad sizes if the DE player wishes.
Wyches are one of the few units in the game thay beat genestealers in nearly everyway, but heh, DE are so rare few nid players get to find this fact out
Anything with a gun really, but most especially Heavy Bolter equivalents.
Although anything with a decent strength and multiple shots can ruin their day, it doesnt even need the AP, since a Genestealer's save is never particularly good even upgraded.
The name refers to facial hair, not playing style.Originally Posted by A news vendor's stand, London, June 1940
Hammerhead submunition anyone?
My gaming group's new motto: That army you're using is overpowered because it hurts my guys, codex is broken and needs a rewrite.
