A very quick - and, hopefully, easy - query for you to answer. Namely, is it permissible to promote the one XV88 in a unit of 1 to be a Team Leader or 'Vre?
Personally I had thought that it was, since these promotions can represent higher experience, etc. and I see no good reasons why XV88s can't operate as Monats in their own right. Indeed, operating as individuals would seem more plausible correlated against greater experience, etc.
However, having recently started using 2 XV88s this way I've received a couple of disparaging comments along the lines of that an individual cannot be promoted to be a Team Leader if there is only one in the team.
It might be (yet) example of the rather-less-than-crystal-clear way GW tend to write things, since having an experienced Monat XV88 seems entirely reasonable, but it might just be me wishfully thinking.
So then, mes braves, what are your views?

Of course they can... it gives Monats access to handy wargear etc. Take one Suit, and make him a Team Leader. Often the extra pts for the Shas'vre aren't worth it, as they only need the wargear access, and not the extra WS.
The other aspect of the TL rank is the fact that it allows access to items not intended for the normal elite level XV88 or XV8 and this access allows the team leader or Vre to operate at a level reflected by its rank. Many weapons or wargear need the experience to get the best use of them, this is reflected in the multi role aspect offered by many items of wargear.
Also what do your opponents mean when they say the XV88 cannot be promoted to team leader if it is not part of a team. Who is to say that the XV88 pilot was promoted and his team was subsequently killed in action. He would not lose the rank simply because his team was killed, he would still carry the rank. I mean would the XV88 lose his team leader rank every time he left the team to do something else? (for instance taking a leave of absence after a tour of duty) and only get it back when he rejoined his team?.
Just tell your opponents that Monat XV88's and XV8's are an integral part of the Tau codex, they are allowed and the team leader rank is not restricted to members of teams. If they do not like it ask them to show the rule that disallows it.
Like Riki said, there's no reason at all not to take a Monat and make him into a T-Ldr. If people start to get uppity about it, just show them the entry in the Codex. Beside the word "Team", it specifies that the team "Consists of 1-3 Broadside Shas'ui". Watch them try to argue that one round, especially since there is nowhere to say that a Monat cannot be made up to Sergeant!

I totally agree - I do that myself just to get access to the wargear which you needs quite often and the pts you spend isn't them who makes the model too expensive...
