Welcome to Librarium Online!
Yes, I did use SEARCH and although there are a lot of posts on the particle whip (mainly template size, AP1 "sniping" and such) I did not see those two answered, and they actually did come up during this weekend for me:
1. Where do you measure the particle whip range from? I usually do it from the crystal, so really the center of the model, but perhaps I am cheating myself of 2-3 inches here?
2. And if the crystal is a good point to measure from, what is the arc of fire on this thing? I was told that the extra "rafters" block LOS from the crystal on all three sides, making in only 90 degree weapon, facing in the direction of the portal (door) on the front of it... I always though that I can fire in any direction...
I will venture a reply.
#1. I read a thread on this and it looked like the conclusion is that you measure from the edge of the vehicle. 360 degrees.
#2. See #1. And in addition, I think it would tell you that that particular weapon had a different arc of fire than 360. I have never heard anything to the tune of it only having a 90 degree arc. Plus, fluff wise I don't think that whip come in a straight line from the crystal. More like a lightning bolt that no matter what's in it's way, it will make the contact.
The arguement for 90 degree AoF is that the crystal atop the 'Lith is the "muzzle" of the PW. However, this is never specificied in the codex or other official GW documentation. Thusly, a 360 AoF seems to rule the day.
Perhaps the crystal is just the source of power for the Power Matrix. I imagine the energy building up in the crystal and then permeating through the body of the Monolith towards the edge closest the target.
