Well, for my upcoming 3000 Point Eldar army, i'm wanting to add in a Super Heavy. The ones im considering are, the Scorpion, the Revenant, and the Cobra. So, the pro's and cons of each:
Cheapest of the three
Very unlikely it will miss, being Twin Linked
Has all the benefits of being Eldar, Holo Fields, Agile.
Only has one big weapon
Weak armour of all Eldar
Probably the nastiest weapon mounted on a Super Heavy of its size
If fired at a vehicle, it cannot scatter far enough to miss
Again, all the Eldar benefits.
Only one weapon system
More expensive than a Scorpion
Weak Armour, again.
Two good weapon systems.
Fastest super heavy, capable of "Flight"
Good BS, as it is most likely of missing with its Pulsars
Capable of fighting in combat
Very fragile for its cost.
Very tall, so hiding behind terrain is even harder.
Now, im very stuck as to which one i want Can anyone help me choose? Or offer any advice of any kind on Eldar Super-Heavies?
Well i've never actually seen any superheavy eldar stuff yet, but I will in a few weeks. I've heard a lot of good stuff about a scorpion though...
yeah, scorp is naff,
the cobra is nice ish, but for my money I like the revenant, it may be the "more shots" thing
however matey, I recomend you look at fliers for Eldar, the nightwing and Pheonix are both excelent
Everything you have been told is a lie!
i'd go with the revenant but can anyone tell me what the cobra is?
Is the scorpion really that bad?! Thats a shame, it looks the coolest out of the three. Well, perhaps not the Revenant...
On the fliers. They do seem good, but i dunno, are they as points efficient as the ground mounted things?
If i were to take a Vampire, would i upgrade it all the way, or keep the transport capacity? And, just looking at the vampire here, I dont think i would feel safe taking one, a bolter could take it down!!
Ok, i have reconsidered on the Vampires. Now, while they are rather good at avoiding enemy weaponry (-12", always hit on 6's) they are rather fragile when hit. However, Eldar have possibly the best defended flyers, due to their Holo Fields.
Now, which Flyer is best.
Well, a hunter has the TL Pulsar, however, in 5th ed, the Twin Linked wont matter much.
A raider doesnt have the Twin Linked, but im unsure of how to model it? It can carry 20 models however (theres no way im not giving it a Pulsar). Should i just buy a Hunter, and convert the Pulsar up a bit?
All thoughts welcome
Edit: Just realised, is there any point in a Raider? Its not an Orbital Lander, so all that can disembark from it is Warp Spiders and Swooping Hawks.
In fact just realised something else. The formation of guardians inside the raider cant leave it. Its not an orbital lander so they cannot get out. Unless im missing something? As far as I know, only Jump Infantry can leave the Vampire Raider.
As long as you're hell-bent on getting a super heavy, I'd recommend a vampire hunter. You can literally sit it deep in your DZ, probably out of range of anything your opponent has to offer, and snipe other super heaves. However, how about getting multiple smaller fliers? There's a reason people love eldar flyers, probably because they are so effective.
Well yes, multiple fliers would be nice. But, against other super heavys (Baneblades are verrry common where I play) the Vampire Hunter beats the three Nightwings hands down.
However, can someone address this problem.
In old Imperial Armour a Vampire was an Orbital Lander, hence it could have landed and let out infantry.
It doesn't have Hover mode, in the new Apocalypse rules.
Now, this means only Jump Infantry may disembark. I would be ok with this, BUT.
There is a formation consisting solely of infantry squads, that can be mounted in the Vampire. Whats the point? They may not leave, as the vampire cannot land.
So is this just a bit of a cock up by GW? Fluffwise i believe they can hover. They certainly used to.
Better check the forgeworld Q+A for the Apocalypse book. It says that Vampires in general have hover mode.
Aha, thank you
Now, I'm deciding on which one is best. There are three main types of Vampire.
Twin Linked Pulsars
Twin Linked Phoenix Missiles
Two Twin Linked Pulse Lasers
30 Man Transport Capacity
Vampire Raider With Pulsar
20 Man Transport Capacity
Now, at the moment i'm leaning on the Vampire Hunter, as the strength D is brutal. It's either that or the Raider with Pulsar. However, that would mean landing with the Vampire, and, when landed, it is just a land speeder when it comes to defences (barring its SPs and Holo fields).
So can anyone help choose?
Also, if I was to take the Raider with Pulsar, how would I model it? Do I get a Pulsar in the Raider kit? Or would I have to buy a Hunter and convert the centre mounted Pulsar?
