I keeep reading these posts about using grots to block snipers but in my codex i don't see anything about grots. Am i just missing them in the codex or where they in like an old white dwarf or something?
Usually a ten man warrior squad with two dark lances is called a sniper squad - they don't have actual sniper rifles, but sniping is what they do.
However, you can use kroot mercenaries if you want real snipers.
Answer to topic title
Snipers are squads of warriors (usually 10 for me) with 2 Dark lances that hide behind your guys and kick some a$$.
Answer to your question
Grots can mean two things
For Dark Eldar they are short for grotesques. You should find this in your codex.
For Orks they are gretchins (but they're not dark eldar so meh )
We refer to 10 man warrior squads (usual size) equipped with 2 Dark Lances as Sniper squads. 36 inch range that'll vaporize just about anything. For around 100 points, can't beat that investment. I carry 1 -2 of these to every battle. If I'm fighting someone with some long range direct fire weapons I'll put a squad of Grots in front of them to soak up the hits. The one downfall is to indirect fire weapons. So I'll try to place the squad as near a table edge, in a corner if it gives me LOS to cover the area I want them shooting into, so there will be a better chance of the scatter die taking the incoming shot off of the table.
A bit of topic, but I just have to add this ^^
Yesterday I played a battle against my buddys IG, and during this battle one of my models earned real sniper status.
It was quite late in the battle, both sides had taken tremendous cassulties, and one mortar barrage reduced one whole of my sniper squads to one man ... one man holding a shadow lance. Prolonged fire fights had reduced the IGs comand squad down to one radio operator and his general, bunkered behind a 4+ wall. In the next tree rounds my last litte sniper one killed the radio-guy, hit the generals refractor field and at last killed him. After this he moved around the field and damaged a leman russ so badly, that my last bikes could finish him off ... and of course I made every round this "last man standing" role, but he just refused to turn tail, as half my army in this battle had done. With the aproval of my buddy I plan to make special rules for him and use him as sniper character, he really earned it.
i think there should be a dark eldar snipe heavy support choice. standard DLs, +10 pts to upgrade to dissies or something.

Having sumthing a little like Eldar Rangers could be fun, long rifles silently picking off guardsmen one by one, wouldn't that freak you out?
Anything is flammable if you try hard enough
It would been cool with for example. Headhunters !!!!!
I dont think Lord of Change got the memo about this post being dead. Someone please add him to the listserv.
