With what I have been reading about the changes coming our way, I have been thinking about my army composition.
Before I go any further, let me say that I have completely missed on playing 4th ed. I have kept up on the fluff & Codices, but haven't played a single game in years. I am rebuilding my Eldar from 3rd ed Ultwe to 4/5th ed versitile.
With the new emphasis seeming being on troops in the new game, this fits in with my line nof thinking in rebuilding this army. My plans were to take 2 squads of Dire Avengers, 2 10 man squads of Guardians w/ starcannons, and a pathfinder squad as the core of my army, give or take a little.
Am I crazy?
I think this will be sound, but I have been known to be very wrong before...
Starcannons are not as effective on Guardians with this codex as they were in the previous edition. It's a much better buy to give them a Scatter Laser; more high strength shots to balance out the iffy BS. That's not a bad core though, so long as you have a purpose set out for those squads. I tend to run Troop-heavy anything, so I'm always a supporter of it.
Yeah, I'm also for the troops, although I like to do themed armies sometimes...
I personally haven't played with my new eldar army yet, but I'm going for something like 4 squads of 8 DA's and 2 squads of 5 pathfinders...
In my space army I run 71 marines with gear and weapons in 1500 pts... Quite fun actually, nothing can destroy them all. I also field more marines than a friend does in 3000 pts
bottom line: go for it!
Yeah, well they're Marines. They're better than some specialists at their area of specialisation.
If you want to do Troops spam, take a Seer Council, an Autarch, Avengers, a unit of Pathfinders and some Guardians, maybe with some Jetbikes. That will give you an "allrounders" force capable of doing some damage.
Alright as I understand it troops are big this time around because only they can take objectives and thus collect many extra VPs.
The problem with guardians is that they aren't good at holding ground and they don't like running forward all on their own. At least not the regular ones. Especially since having a troop rifle that shoots twice after you move is the default.
The way I see it DA like to move up. So that's OK.
Jetbikes are all about grabbing the objective on the last turn. And generally being an awsome annoyance the rest of the fight.
Stom Guardians? I'm not feeling it. Though they could conceal and assist some Harlies I suppose.
Pathfinders. Well snipers are getting new rules. I dunno
Out of all of these I particularily like the jetbikes. Because in most cases the best way to deal with our troops is to attack them with their troops. If successful that puts their troops on the object.
With jetbikes you can make them choose to either sit out the battle on the objective and watch their army get cut up. Or they can move off objectives after bikes, which will turbo onto the objective in the last turn.
