I`m just starting an eldar army, and since I love guardians so much I am going to have a fair deal of them.
So I was thinking 3-4 squads of 10 guardians with a starcannon. add to that some d-cannons, some dark reapers and some counterattack options in the form of an avatar and scorpions...
Have anyone any opinions on an army like this? It may be a bit vulnerable, but it would also make marines cry with anguish at the sight of all those ap 2 weapons..
thanks in advance
Ahh the good old days of 3 shot star cannons. They were our assault cannons. Unforntunatly with increase in points and less shots i think its proberly more viable to go scatter lasers. Some one ant to do the math?
Oh and also if ur doing hoards of guardians just remember the warocks w/conceal and the avatar for fearless
If you're facing Marines (which, lets be honest, is highly likely), then you may find Starcannons more worthy of investment over Scatter Lasers. Granted, I really can't be bothered doing the math to back it up, but I have that feeling that woudning them on a 2+ with no save is pretty good.
I agree, however, with your last statement about the Avatar and Concealocks. If you want to use Guardians, a decent save just might come in useful.
To the original post, imo you can't really call Guardian-spam a gunline, since they're too short-ranged. Reaper-spam and Vyper-spam, we're talking. But your army does sound very viable, especially in tourneys.
With the impending arrival of 5th, where you basically get 4+ cover for being on the board, scatter lasers will still be the way to go.
Although, an EML or two wouldn't be bad, considering the new blast weapon rules.
Yhea i think it works that if u hit with a blats it hits but if u miss it scatters 2d6 - I so for guardians thats a scatter of 8" at most. Not to shabby.
As for the maths, doing it of the top of my head here, Star cannons will get about 0.86 kills per 2 shots while the Scatter lasers 4 shots will get 0.57 kills (thats against MEQ). The argument for the scatter laser is that it it has POTENTIAL for more damage than the scatter laser, especialy with hoards/AV10. In short its more versitile. Also with the new rules a 4+ cover save is looking very likley, as said above, so the scatter laser stays the same whilst the star cannon falls to 0.43 kills.
As i said b4 star cannons used to pwn, i had ten , but their just not worth it, more points for less shots? Nah stick with bucket loads of dice and you cant go wrong.

Ah, haven't been keeping up with 5th Ed, not liking the little I do know about it.
In that case, go the Scatter lasers.
I've been playing gunline eldar for a while now. Although that name seems slightly inapproriate as our gunlines tend to move around a lot.
You need war walkers, trust me. 3 war walkers /w scatter lasers adds a lot to your firepower.
I'd also heavily recommend scatter lasers for your guardians, starcannons are kind of good against marines but something a lot of players miss about the scatter laser is how good it is against vehicles. Scatter lasers (especially when you have multiple guardian squads) can pop rhino's or land speeder squadrons or any other lightly armoured thing.
Harlequins are the ultimate counter-attack unit. I know people will cry cheese, but just point out your lack of holo-fields (don't take holo-fields ).
All this is testing under 4th ed though, 5th ed is likely to screw around with it a lot.
Check out my Codex: Farmyard Animals here!
If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Eldar gunline has to be eldarite... lighting-fast and lighting-hard-striking.
...30 Warps Spiders are enough? 750 points of armoured, high-skill-leadership-mobile elite S6 infantry able to ever-deep strike. I do not see any problem. + of course some troops guardians and reapers as static line to force enemy not to mention spiders.
With guardians you are right with the Avatar, just beacuse of how he makes everyone in 12" fearless. Needed with our civilians crap leadership.
What once was courage has now cursed in the wars we've made.
We are the sinners, before our graves.
Now now guardian defenders ld is not c*&$. if you want rubbish ld go see the stat line for white sheilds.
