After finishing work on my Imperial Guard & Death Guard armies I’d been thinking about collecting a Necron army for some time now and was getting ready to start building my army… But that was before 5th edition turned 40k into a game that favoured combat over shooting kind of like fantasy what with the ‘marching’ I mean ‘fleet of foot’ rule, I guess that’s what you get for putting a fantasy specialist in charge of redesigning 40k.
The Necrons main weakness is their poorness in close combat and with their dimmed down gauss weapons, plus everything I’ve read so far on the ‘Anti-Tank Crisis’ thread I have my doubts about the effectiveness of this army.
I’ve only brought a Monolith so far so its not to late to flog it on eBay and look at another army for my Mechanicus cult theme, or should I build it and hope that the Necron codex re-release next year will restore it’s ‘power’?
Some of you may thing this is a stupid question but when you consider the costs and the time it will take to build and convert an army, you can understand my hesitation.
I would wait about 2 months before you make any huge purchases. Most of us already have Necron armies and you will have no shortage of threads in the coming months discussing their effectiveness. If you can wait I would wait because that will be a huge advantage to your choice.
Keep in mind they have a new Codex on the horizon so that could change the army in a huge way again down the road.
If you're impatient at all like me and don't want to wait, you should feel perfectly safe buying some warriors and destroyers and make some immortals. I really doubt whatever changes these won't go out of style or effectiveness.
The Battleforce for necrons is pretty safe I think, and a fantastic deal.
I personally don't think that necrons will be hit that hard in the new edition. Sure, we glancing takes a big hit, but we can now give our warriors cover saves using really inexpensive scarabs. Honestly vehicles used to be wasted points against necrons, maybe now they'll actually be worth taking against us.
The veil makes capturing objectives easy, and our troops are really hard to kill so they'll be good for capturing objectives.
You could always get a friend to play against and just play proxy models to see if you like them or not. I've found that the best way to decide if you want to start a new army.
