Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok I was looking through my codex that other day and saw 2 things that confused me?
One is Biovores with Bio Acid mines = amazing? 2D6 penetration and AP3 at 55 points?
and Raveners? I dont really see a downside to them either they are fast, have 3 attacks(base) and can have weapon symbiotes. they are S4T4 which is about average
so really i have one question, where is the hidden downside to either of these models becuase i dont see too many of them in peoples lists
- What we do in life, echoes in eternity.
Biovores take up a previous heavy support slot which could be used for zoans or fexes, which many people want to use instead as they are usually more effective.
For raveners the catch is that their very fragile, try to keep them as much in cover as possible, one good round of shooting will see these little beauties dead.
Also Biovores out of synapse can be a problem as they are leadership 5 and as their weapon is heavy they cannot move and then shoot.
Raveners are very fragile with only a 5+ save, most enemies in shooting are just going to flat out deny that save to you.
Finally with Biovores you need to be very lucky to do very much pinning with the bio-acid mine as average is going to give you only a 10. The slot is much better used for a Carnifex or a Zoa' brood.
But overall, bio-acid isn't that great. Average of 10 with a large deviation makes them mediocre at best. Not to mention that the randomness of hitting makes the chances of doing anything at all a lot less.
That being said, there's a few people who like biovores around here. They just don't work that great for me.
"The internet perceives censorship as damage, and routes around it."
Under 4th ed I found raveners extremely useful as stiffeners for hormagaunts, as fast units for taking objectives, for rolling up gunlines, and even as bait. I suspect they'll be a lot less useful in 5th ed as rending has been depowered and units can't consolidate into fresh conflicts.
To me they seem expensive now for what you get, but maybe it's just a matter of fiding different uses for them.
On biovores, add the fact that all mines use the small blast template. I've used three biovores in a few games. They've never done anything worthwile. Maybe they'll take out a few models or get a lucky hit. But generally the randomness and small template make them so subpar that they're not worth bring to the field.
In the two games I've played with my 'nids I've actually found the fast attack spore mines to be very useful. (I don't have a biovore) Against any infantry the bio acid mines work rather well, granted scatter. Also as barrage weapons they cause pinning, though you only get one shot/squad. I've been looking at biovores as a firesupport unit when I start working up to 1.5k but we'll see.
However as stated Biovores use up a HS slot, and Carnifex/zoanthropes being able to run now makes them both even more devastating. It's all up to whether you feel it's a fair tradeoff
