Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey guys I frequently play against tank heavy armies, mainly the Imperial Guard. Somehow I can never seem to destroy their tanks. The constant dropping of pie plates literally destroys my swarms, by the time I reach their lines, my troops are too few in number.
I was wondering, as a Tyranid player, what is the best way to take care of heavy armor such as the Leman Russ and possibly the Baneblade in our Apocalypse missions?
Thanks very much for the help, I need to get rid of these tanks!!!
I would say rending claws and sniperfexs. Maybe try to get in with a Broodlord and have him with a group of stealers, his infiltrate move should help you get closer to the tanks and maybe a winged tyrant to get in there fast? I don't know exactly how well Zoanthropes do against tanks but they might be able to help.
I might even suggest using some biovores, scatter spore mines around the tanks to limit their movements so they can't sweet around you and try to move from cover to cover?

In an Apoc. game I'm a favorite of the "Mycetic Assault Swarm". Throw in a cheaper variation of the Barbed Hierodule or even two and on turn two you have a heavy shooting weapon hitting force hitting the field behind enemy lines that can do some massive damage. The legendary Barb. has 6 TL S10 shots and they're even AP:3 so they can help mow down most infantry as well. Also going into CC with that brute is insane with 7 S10 attacks and 2D6 penetration, spells tank doom.
In a regular game running Zoa's with Warp Blast and Synapse Creature helps me out. Yeah you have to take a psychic test to shoot the high powered bolt but the low powered bolt is great for infantry and the high powered one can help with your tank problem or anything else with a pesky 2+ save.
Finally just try to hit it often with a VC from a creature with enough strength. Even just glancing can render the tank an empty shell once immobolized and it has zero guns. Then you can deal with it at your leisure.
Sniperfexes and Lictors. Lictors will hit against rear armour and assault when they arrive. Sniperfexes will rarely destroy a tank, but all you have to do is keep it from shooting for a turn or two. Broodlord or any unit that infiltrates/scouts can now flank, so popping in from the sides with a small unit of stealers will help. I ran two units of 6 stealers with scouts and extended carapce in my last game. They took out a LST and a unit of marines that were near the edges. If you know you're going against guard, you might want to consider dropping the EC to save points.
So with 2 sniperfexes you should be able to glance a tank or two to keep it from shooting for a turn. With the lictor allowing a reroll of reserves, you should then be able to bring at least one unit of stealers in my turn 3 and when the lictor arrives there's another anti-tank unit.
Oh and taking some acid spore mines as FA choice might be useful. They're pretty hit or miss, but even if they miss they can cause havoc among an IG line.
Hope that helps.

Same as the previous edition, sniperfexes! Personally I'm happy if I get a few turns of immobilize with weapons blown off. Makes my opponent worry about getting the troops out of the tank more than what the rest of my army is about to do.
Sure it's a little harder now with the -2 for glancing. But still just as effective.
The anti-tank Units i generaly use as Tyranids would be:
Sniperfex: Venom Cannon glances like crazy, and Barbed Strangler can do quite a bit of damage to light(er) tanks.
Zoanthrope: Not much experience with these guys, but warp blast could be effective. The range is a little limiting though.
Anything with Rending (Broodlord mainly): Not as effective in 5th, but potentialy devistating to rear/side armor on most tanks.
Biovore: Haven't tried one of these in a long time, I supose its worth a shot but don't take my word for it.
Thats all I can think of at the moment. A bunch of Flanking Genestealers and a broodlord could make him rethink his positions. Pair that with a sniperfex or two to immobolize and or destroy any remaining threats, maybe a few Zoanthropes, and you're on your way to victory.
