I'm buying my first models really soon.
I want a 90% melee army, but only if it works. Otherwise I'd like to use a majorly Dakka army: with tons of Dakkafexes, Dakka Flyrants and Deathgaunts.
I have a good few hundred dollars and I'm thinking about getting something like this:
Gaunt boxed set x 2-3 (converting to make them all hormies) anyone no a good way to make the termies into hormogaunts? Also, its 16/16 right? so each box set in all is 32? or is it 8/8 and a total of 16.
Tyranid Boxed set x 1 (giving him wings def, prolly 2 talons and other wargear that doesnt actually show up on the model). Wings will keep up with fleet and i will probably not use the full 12" unless synapse lets me. And like the Guide said, i will use the flyrant to flank and attract fire. Just like a tank in WoW (if anyone plays).
Warrior or Carnifex boxed set x 1 (warriors will have wings and talons.... 3 mini flyrants) I will use them to hide inside the gaunt swarm for both synapse and cover. (Carnifex will have 2x Devourers (Dakkafex) and will be used to shoot up..... stuff, mostly weak numberous squas)
-Be aware, this isnt an army list, simply me asking what i should buy-
Any tips on converting for the wings and stuff? I'm sure i can change the wings completely... like instead of wings give it a snake-like body and say that is what is causing the extra 6" movement.
I need this answered before I build anyone, >>can flyers run?<<
I think the Tyranid boxed army set (Battle force?) is always a good way to start out. I think the army your looking for is kind of Nid-zilla lots of big guys that pack alot of punch. Problem you might face is: getting Carnifex into melee. I played about ten games with him having a venom cannon and scything talons and just one with him armed with venom cannon and barbed strangler and he was so much more useful this last game then ever before. Also Hive tyrants do pretty well in melee without alot of the close quarter weapons so maybe even arm him with ranged weapons and use biomorphs to help him in melee and he should do fine. Got off track here...I would strongly suggest buying the army set to start yourself off with, it gives you a good amount of models. They have the assault box which has a bunch of genestealers, termagaunts, hornagaunts, warrriors and three fexs in it! but you will still have to buy a Tyrant
"Ohm nom nom nom"
I dont want the battle force because it comes with unneccisary units.
I've done a lot of thinking and my list will be looking something like this:
Flyrant w/ scything talons
100% Hormogaunts, no shooty gaunts
Genestealers 1/4 of the amount of gaunts (in 750pts i have 34 gaunts and 8 stealers)
A maximum of 1 Carnifex until 1750+
To fill the points between 750-1250 I'm thinking Warriors, Lictors and Raveners.
Never going over 3 Warriors per squad (for synaptic reasons)
My army should be a pretty well rounded swarm with a few big guys to kill tanks and some medium sized guys (lictors/ravengers/warriors) to kill some of the more elite units in the enemy field.
idk, what do you guys think?
Just to clarify:
Tyrant = flying melee
Gaunts = sprinting melee
Stealers = sprinting elite melee
Carnifex = walking turret
Lictors = deep striking melee
Raveners = deep striking melee
Warriors = flying (mini tyrant) melee
So I'm still trying to stay heavy on the melee.
Because it isnt scary to have bugs shoot you, only scary when they claw at your face.
Battleforce for $63 (Buying separately from GW would cost $145)
You can buy multiple battleforces, then sell whatever excess you have on ebay.
Anyway, Yes flying creatures can run (it doesn't say otherwise in the rules). I wouldn't get too many things at once, you can easily become overloaded. If you start putting things together, and painting, and seeing that you have 100 more models to build/paint, it can become more of a job than a fun hobby.
I cant use ebay, nor do I have any effective way of selling extras.
Painting/modeling is my favorite part!
erm, exactly which parts of the battleforce are unnecessary? 1 Fex, 3 warriors, stealers and gaunts... Hmmm, all things you say you want... weird that
Anyway if your really wanting a swarming army, your going to need about...
3 box's of gaunts (8 of each per box, use greenstuff or trade for extra scything talons to convert the termies into hormies. However Id go the other way and make them all gun gaunts, and pay 2 points extra to have some gargoyles instead of hormies.)
2 box's of stealers (possibly 3 boxes if you want a broodlord, and with the new flanking rules, you really really do!)
1 Hive Tyrant with wings.
2-3 Zoanthropes (These guys will stick around providing synapse long after your warriors bite the dust) ((Usually))
Warriors.... I hate them, would never take them, theres so much more that can fill thier role for less points.
12+ Gargoyles. Optional, they cost alot of money but they are probably one of the best units we have and shouldnt be overlooked. For saving money, make wings for your gaunts, job done.
2-6 Raveners. Equipped with rending claws these guys are brutal.
In all honesty, id buy 2 battleforces, that will give you a solid foundation, then add to it whatever you think you'll need. Hope that was helpful.
You can currently get a set called a Tyranid Assault Brood, which costs as much as 2 battle forces and contains 2 battle forces and a free fex. That might be an option- You'll have 32 gaunts, 16 stealers, 3 fexes, 6 warriors, and a couple of ripper swarms. All you need really is a flyrant and you're set.
40K armies: Tyranids (2001), Space Wolves (2008), Sisters of Battle (2011)
Current Rep: 1337
I dont know, I just really dont think thats what I'm looking for.
I'm thinking about buying 2 Gaunts sets, trading the 15 termies to my friend for 16 Hormagaunts, 1 stealer set and 1 tyrant set.
That would be my 750 army.
What I might do, from then on is buy 1 full squad of all elites/fast attack, bcuz there arent many and it wouldnt cost too much, but rather give me a good oppurunity to test out swarms.
8-16 Gargoyles (1 boxed set of gaunts, using termigaunts and hormagaunts w/ Fleshborers all converted to 'fly')
I'd probably get 3 Zoanthropes and 3 Biovores too, just to see if they are nice.
Actually.... after writing this I wouldnt have any fexes... so I'll just buy the Assault force and then add all these other guys ^^
Can someone give me the price on the Assault Force? I cant get to the us.games-workshop site.
$180. Would be cheaper to buy two battleforces for $63 from that other place and then another 'fex for $32.
