I've loved the fluff behind the orks since playing Dawn Of War Winter Assault & Dark Crusade, and I think they are one of the best armies with the new rules being able to get into combat by turn 2 and all, but thats not what i'm here to talk about.
Now all my armies are converted to a theme my guard are Grots, my Necrons are a Renegade Mechanicus Cult and my chaos are The Walking Dead!
Now there are three themes that I know for Orks which is too common for my tastes.Feral Orks - Pirate Orks - Chaos Orks
"Can you guys help me in coming up with a theme for an Ork army, any ideas?"
k, i got no idea where i got this quote from, but i found it funny so i saved it in my text document of quotes
"So the Dire Avengers get a better Armor Save over Guardians just because they wear bigger hats and loincloths? Heaven help us all if the Orks ever discover Sombrero-and-Poncho Technology!"
might float your boat or give a little inspiration. either way sombrero brandishing orks seems a little too fitting to me. really big ones, about as big as the base.
Ok fellows we have a difficult task, so we have to be more deadly than everyday.
Make mistakes and confuse the enemy - The Doctor
Tactics are nice but it is violence that wins the day.
Feral, Pirate, Chaos aren't too common and are all great ideas. I've never seen any of them but they'd all be awesome and fluffy. Feral would be great if you converted boar-drawn transports, lots of squigoths, boar cavalry (use warbikes).
A cybork-themed army would be sweet.
Dred-bash is cool and would be a blast to convert.
I had an idea once to convert an army of "grey" Orks, who were essentially Necron hunters (if you follow the idea that the Old Ones created Orks to combat Necrons, as they created humans and Eldar for the same reason). Necron technology, use a looted Monolith (by some act of Orkish psyche, they are able to keep the living metal of the Necrons from going poof), stuff like that.
I dont know, uh maybe like a pansy ork theme...like wood elves! Or try to incorporate pacifism, but that would be hard.
"The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?"
there are a bunch of good theme army ideas at The Jungle(Themed Army Ideas) favorites include the Greater Waagh! (orks fighting for the Greater Good) and da Blood orks (orks who are obsessed with the Blood Angels) they haven't been updated for the new 'dex yet, but its easy to figure out.
In a similar vein you could take another army and orkify it. (Orky Eldar with "gardian" boyz and Dark Reapas?) Or maybe ork Big Game Huntas- orks obsessed with hunting tyrannids (big game from another galaxy) you could paint them in kaki colors and give them those outback style hats. feel free to add as many tasteless Steve Irwin references as you want (like shouting "Kri-Kee!" when your boyz bring down a Hive Tyrant...)
and i don't want to start a flame war but you could go Chaos orks. its been hotly debated on the fluff section, but a bunch of orks worshiping Grandfather Nurgle would kick "a." (he's big and green so you'd get less flack from fluff nazis)
the best thing about it is, they're orks. they're so anarchic and unique you can do almost anything with them and it can be fluffy.
My award winning Orky tale
I remember seeing pics of ork clowns. They were pretty funky and included the tiny car full of boys.
I was told a while ago that tyranids can't absorb ork DNA properly. That after a while the ork DNA takes over and they start being orks again. How about a tyranid army which devoured a Waaagh (unlikely I know!) that has started to 'devolve' (or evolve in the orky opinion) back into orks. It would be hard but look awesome if done right.

There is some fluff that indicates orks can be absorbed by nids and incorporated (I believe the biovore is one example?) but I could see them as having problems with absorption. And one of the hive fleets was sent directly into ork territory, so a tyranid hunter makes sense. Or perhaps an ork fleet that has been infected by genestealers or other tyranids? I also like the de-evolution theme idea.
Heres an idea- water orks. Give them jet skis as bikes, motor boats as transports, a big barge for a battle wagon, storm boyz on souped-up surf boards, etc. Go nuts on conversions and make the bases all in water, perhaps slightly submerged on some vehicles and with waves and splashing.
Anime Orks? A few years ago I made a warboss using a SD Gundam kit I got in China, and I thought he looked pretty cool (not everyone agreed unfortunately). I'm pretty sure you can get them over the net and they would be great for mega-armour. There are stacks of different kits with bizarre japanimation mecha weapons all over them.
Some bright colours, clunky stuff that looks like orkified tau/mecha technology, and you're away. Never seen anyone else do it, ever, and I'm guessing from your other awesome armies that you are after originality.
