I've been told that it's useless bringing a shas'o because you can buy 2 crisis suits for 130 points, and the ability to roll leadership twice will get you out of ALOT of jams.

Shaso.
Okay he cant be shot if hes with 6" of another squad. he can lay down a hell of alot of firepower and you can count on it hitting most of the time. 4 wounds 4 attacks for those sticking h t h situations you cant run from. He is a monster outdoing most normal leaders except for his ws. Teamed with a bodyguard depending on points that your are allowed they can practically take out whole 10 man teams with their weapons alone.
Etheral is nice, hes a banner really. I see him as really a support HQ to those who actually fight. Hes inspirational not a figure to give tactical advice really though I know some of them can like Aun'shi I personnally think the Shas'o is the man or Tau I mean.

Oh, for...

Well... I guess it depends on your style of play, but the way I look at it, I'm *going* to take one or the other (obviously)... so I compare it like this.

Shas'o - Bounces, carries a lethal variety of weapons, is kinda unlikely to miss, and all in all is a potential mobile tank-buster. Also can carry a *lot* of Hard-wired equipment and a bodyguard. In short, my kind of guy.

Ethereal - Short. Blue. "Look out, he's lurking behind us - the enemy's much less scary than he is..." "He's dead! Lets run for it!"

'nuff said

I agree with Janus, I kinda find the prospect of my entire army making a run for it rather horrifying and embarrasing. I believe that's what happened when GW were first testing the Necron Pylon... ...all those Aun bunched up together... <_<

I always take both now, I find the re-rolls from the Ethereals Inspring Presence valuable especially since i take small squads of fire warriors. I find the best thing to do is leave him behind or move him behind a group of fire warriors so he cant be shot at. Today i was attacked by a Daemon Hunter Callidus Assasin who teleported into shooting range he shot me and missed went into battle and my Ethereal took 1 wound instantly but did not receive any more damage, the assasin decided to withdraw a mere 2" where he was then dealt with in 1 blow by my Fusion Blaster of Shas'O. Magic!

Oh and I beat the Daemon Hunters as well.

Its kinda an evolving issue. When I first fielded my Tau, the enemy kept on walking their Space Marines at me, trusting to their Power-armour... which I promptly plasma-d to death.

Then they started getting lascannon to try to deal with my Crisis suits... and I bought Shield Drones.

Then they went for masses and masses of cheap people, hoping to swarm me under in close combat - fairly easy to do to Tau, I'll admit. Normally. Then my Stealth Suits began to make an appearance... scything through the opposition, and when they *were* caught in close combat tending to beat up their attackers with their nifty Stealth Armour rule.

Most recently, my foes have begun to take more and more Ordnance weapons, smashing my 'suits into the ground while their Shield Drones bounce the damage - but fade away with the death of their controller. Strangely enough, Shield Generators have started popping up on all my models over two inches tall.

What all this is working up to, I guess, is that while earlier on I might have taken an Ethereal and hidden it behind or within a squad of Fire warriors at the back, these days I have no intention of giving my foe a target to simply drop a single ordnance template on, flatten, and break large amounts of my army in one shot...

Still, that's just me

I do use an etheral not that I think their useless but I use Aunshi who think is one of the better models out there. He and he always fights with a retinue of warriors in a devilfish can keep any basic unit of space marines or otherwise tied up for a good pierod of time. I have even come out ahead and then claimed a table edge. He has excellent rules and for 105 points I think he is a steal. Just me though.

I love th elook on my opponenets face when I assualt.
