Just got back from an utter kicking at 1500pts
We played a standard game, rolling for type of mission and indeed deployment zones. I think we got capture and hold as the mission and we got dawn of war as deployment.
It went badly from here on really. He deployed his two troops choices, which were a truck mob of 12 and a huge unit of 30 choppa boys along with a wierdboy. Both units led by nobs, all ready to pile my objective.
Due to my objective being a bit far forwards, I was prevented by the 24" rule from deploying any troops in front of it. This meant my two squads of troops and HQ unit had to deploy to the sides and hopefully blockade my objective.
My holding troops were 10 dire avengers, exarch, twin cats, bladestorm, with a wave serpent, with twin shuriken cannons. I also had 14 storm guardians with two flamers, led by a warlock with a singing spear and enhance ready to pile forwards and use numbers to block him off. I finished off with my HQ of a farseer with Guide and Doom, along with 5 warlocks, all armed with witchblades and one with enhance.
The rest of my army was as follows:
10 guardians, scatter laser,
10 guardians, scatter laser,
1 Wraithlord, EML, Wraithsword
10 Scorpions, Exarch, chainsabres, stalker [ thought id give them a whirl, they were Klkn]
7 Hawks, Exarch, Sunrifle, skyleap
6 Warpspiders, Exarch, add death spinner, withdraw
2 Vypers each with a pair of shuriken cannons
I got utterly mauled.
He had in total this in reserve.
Warboss with 4 mega armoured nobs
7 lootas with mega blaster things
5 burna boys [ i think both these units had a mek with some plasma gun?]
30 ardboys including 2 eavy shootas and a Nob
30 shootaboys, including 2 eavy shootas and a Nob
Looted russ tank thing with a battle cannon
Any idea why I did so badly? I thought my army would do okay. As a bit of a guide, my opponent does not normally use mega armour or indeed lootas. As far as I was aware he had no armour either availiable to him, which hopefully goes some way into explaining the lack of anti tank.
Dawn of War is a highly unpleasant scenario for many lists and favours a force like your opponents Ork setup, the best plan in this situation in my mind is to simply concede ground. If your opponent has you outmatched at the offset like that they drop back moving and firing, try to damage/destroy his transport, pick at his troops. The units he's deployed there are clearly for taking your objective so they will come to you, you want to lure them to your board edge right where your reinforcements are coming on, that will leave his troops way across the board when they arrive while you can bring overwhelming force to bear on his initial selections.
Once there you can easily move back and reclaim your objective and start looking at mauling the remaining troop choices on his objective for a nice solid 1-0 victory. Orks like Nids and Guard can put down a lot of force in those early selections and standing up and taking them on head to head will often just lead to 2 dead troop choices and a mauled HQ.
He had big squads of dethguns and burnas defending his objective, with a large squad of shoota boys sat around the front of the building with a wall defending him.
If a neutral third party had not set the table up I would have complained it was biased.
Im not sure what I could have assaulted against dethguns and burnas, as troops and tanks were fairly vunerable to both, with the sheer volume he had.
My HQ of farseer and 5 warlocks did a very good job of wiping out the unit that killed the scorpions, and then charging the mega armour in a desperate attempt to witchblade them to death with doom. This plan was working fine, and I was grinding down the mega armour with some lucky rune armour saves, but then the 30 strong ardboy squad charged in getting about 20 or so within 2 inches, adding a massive pile of extra attacks against them and they died.
I guess you got smashed in CC? Maybe more CC troops like banshees would have helped?
I also agree that you should have given ground and let him come to you - you're a fast moving army so you shouldn't worry about occupying any objectives early on as you will have time to move in later in the game.
I always give away objectives and then re-take them as I find it easy to attack then defend. Or use a 10 strong WG unit with Warlock as troops.
Normally I always take a unit of wraithguard and one of fire dragons, but I was attempting to field a lot of long range heavy weapons, hence the inclusion of guardians with support platforms. On the early turns 1-3 it looked like I was actually doing rather well, as I was pushing his orks back towards his objective as well as defeating his first wave against me.
It was the bombardment from the looted russ along with mega armoured assault which left me in a host of trouble, as my poor troops didn't have a chance vs s8 ap3 large blasts.
The combat guardians, which were not the best in the world, had enhance and two flamers but got assaulted by truckboys on turn one due to the silly deployment rules of dawn of war.
I guess I need to read the mission objectives a bit more.
I am thinking of fielding two units of scorpions, which I have the models for, rather than banshees who might struggle to injure the orks, although I could use a unit or two of banshees if needs be.
Do you really mean "looted russ" or do you mean looted vehicle? I ask because in the new ork rules all looted vehicles carry the same stat lines and is a rather downgraded version of the looted russ - I know this because I also have an ork speedfreek army and the new ork codex nerfed it all to hell and made most of my hundreds of pounds of investment illeagal (boo hiss GW!)
Looted tank, whatever it was it had a battle cannon and sponson eavy shootas, so I figured it was a russ. Admittedly its armour 11 did not seem too brilliant for a proper tank.
Yeah that sounds normal then.
How did the WL do? Against a horde it may have been good to fit him with two flamers as well as the EML from some close range toasting.
The wraithlord should have done well. It had two flamers and the wraithsword along with its EML. Unfortunatly due to a complete lack of other heavy weapons in my army, it spent its entire game firing at the looted tank to keep it occupied and not firing its battle cannon at my poor eldar infantry.
If I had taken some other form of anti tank, then yes, I imagine it would have done rather well against the orks. Poor planning on my part I am afraid.
As both an ork and eldar player, I have a few comments.
#1- Jetbikes. Rapidly shooting into a horde of boyz and then jumping back out of their range and either blasting 'em with a blade storm via avengers or assaulting them with like some scorpions or something.
#2- Your opponent's list wasn't even that great. A lot of ork lists can field upwards of 100 boyz and possibly 3 pie plate dropping tanks that are worth less than 150 pts. Most Eldar lists can't take that kind of punishment. Scouting warwalkers, 2+ cover save pathfinders and other points denial tactics can work well here.
#3- FIRE PRISMS. 2 or 3 stripped down tanks with new 5th edition blasts = lots of dead boyz. This is what I'm most scared of from an Eldar army when I play my orks.
New assault rules mean that those 30 boy mobs are gonna really hurt anything they hit. New LOS and cover rules means more save for him, but also more saves for you.
That's all I got.
I'm trying to catalog every song with a reference to yetis or Sasquatch. Please help.
