im about to become a new ork player. orks have never realy held much interest for me, but the new models look fantastic, and for some reason i seem to be drawn to them at the moment, with the release of Asault on black reach, it seemed like a good idea to start an ork army.
i was wondering if you guys have any tips for my starting force, with my budget only being around £100.
im going just over half on the asault on black reach box with a friend, because he is starting a new black templars army, but he just wants the models, where as i want the rule book 2, so thats 25 out of my budget. Im also possibly going to be buying a second bunch of orcks from the asault on black reach set from my friends dad for around £20.
this will leave me about £55 to play with and add some specialised units to my army
from the boxes il already have
2 fast attacks
and a decent number of boys to be starting with
im just asking you more experienced players what you think would be the next good addition to give me more 'survivability' in games involving armour
Welcome to the Waaagh! If yooz gunna fit in wif da boyz yer gonna want ter start talkin propa Orky. Uvverwise we may fink youz a lousy beekee or even worse, a stinkin' panzee! Orks is da best
That sounds like a great start for an army. 2 Bosses, 10 Nobs, 40 Boyz, and 6 Koptas is plenty to start with. Now, you say you have 55 pounds to work with, which is about $110 in real money right? That's just enough for a Battleforce and some modelling supplies (glue, paint, choppy bits). The BF is an awesome deal and will give you 20 boyz, a Trukk, and 3 Bikes. And when Orks are concerned, the more Boyz the better!
You can organize them however you like, but I think 2 mobs of 20 sluggas and a mob of 20 shootas would work quite well. Add PK Nobs to taste in each unit and you're set on Troops. If you take a Boss Nobs will be Troops as well, so you have 4 solid Troops units right there. You could even toss the Nobz in a Trukk if you want them to gut stuck in quicker (though you should be careful, that's a lot of points in a fairly flimsy vehicle). Deff Koptas are ideal for tank-hunting and harassment. 3 Bikes isn't all that much, but you can use them to screen your trukk or run a 2nd Boss and field them as Biker mobs (5 Troops choices).
That should easily be around 1000 points, and it doesn't even take into account kunvershuns and scratchbuilding. The best part about Orky vehicles and gear is that you can make it from anything. Try your hand at slapping together more Trukks, some Looted Wagons, Kanz, Buggies, or even a Battlewagon. You really can't go wrong, so let those creative juices flow.
Did you have anything in mind you wanted from the army? Shooty, choppy, horde, speedy, mechanized, etc?

I'd convert one of the warbosses into a different HQ choice, perhaps either a warp 'ead or big mek with kustom force field, to add a little more variety to the army.
So far you have 6 deffkoptas (I'd use a single unit of 5), 2 HQs, and 40 boyz.
What you really need to do is decide if you're going to play horde or speed freaks.
If you want speed, you should buy 3 trukks and a box of boyz. I'd then convert the box of boyz into a unit of kommandos with special weapons and either a nob with a powerklaw and bosspole, or Snikkrot. Make sure every unit of trukk boyz has a nob with a powerklaw and bosspole. Also, leave room in one of the trukks for an HQ to fit in. If you want to use both in the same list, leave room for them in two of the trukks. The only upgrade I'd give the trukk is a ram.
If you want numbers, then you should spend it all on more boyz. You could buy 5 boxes of boyz and add 50-55 boyz to the army. That's enough to run 3-4 units of 20-30 boyz, with special weapons, nobz, powerklaws and bosspoles. This is probably the more competitive of the two options.
The battleforce isn't a bad idea, but 3 bikes aren't great on their own...and honestly, I'm not really very impressed with bikes in any case. You're better off buying a trukk and 4 boxes of boyz instead. I'd rather have 20-22 more boyz, rather than 3 bikes.

thanks guys, you've all been realy helpful, ad theres a fair few things to think about there. im planning on getting the codex in the next couple of days, although i wont b properly starting my army till september (gots to love student loan days ). im planning on posting a new thread when i sart my army, so i can let you all know how my development is going, and you can give more thoughts and opinions.
Hive Fleet Penance - 3500 Points - 4/1/0
Waaaaaaagh Skagtrot (40k Orks) - In Progress
Dinhar Whitestar's Dragon Host (H.E) - 2000 Points
Go with a looted tank with ordanace, 2 battle wagons one with mega nobz both with ordance, 1 or 2 big meks with shokk attack gun and then over 100 boyz and take vulcha boyz, lootas, and a squad of tank bustas if your running 2.5k like my friend thats his basic list and its undefeated...then again all he's ever fought are marines so....maybe not.
Hmmm Deathwing...or...Grimmnar's Wolf Guard Termies...I think I'll be depressed rather then Barbaric. Deathwing!
