Glue them on
Hand put them on
I voted other because to assemble my scarabs I cut them all out of the spure, lay them, the stands and bases out on the table, I then proceed to yell at them furiously and they begin to assemble themselves. I encourage them along the way but firing a few shots off with my plasma gun.
This process typically takes around 30 seconds but can be quite dangerous with the plasma gun getting hot.
I don't use the weird plastic stick things privided. I use 1 mm brass pinning stuff to attach them to the base. I got fed up with scarabs snapping off the plastic bits...
I do glue them onto the brass stuff though.
My blog - http://wingsofsanguinius.blogspot.com
Been here nearly 10 years and still haven't managed 500 posts.
And don't be fooled. This was a REAL space marine army, they have allergic reactions to ak 47's.
I drill a tiny hole in the base of the scarab and then insert (and glue) a thin brass rod, ie. a paper clip. I paint the scarab. Then I build the base, paint it and drill four tiny holes around the base and glue the scarabs in. It looks a lot nicer than the big, fat stands you get on the sprue.
I glue their plastic stands to the base, then don't glue them to the stand. Sometimes they come off but it is not a big deal. Keeps me from having to rig them when they break off with stand inside them.
Also, 3 TO A BASE! Turning 21 into 28!
I just used the stems they came with, and they've worked fine for me so far. I do use three stalks per base instead of four, however. Perfectly game-legal and if you can swing an extra base or two, you'll have more scarab swarms. I got nine swarms out of the battleforce this way. Very kewl.
Mr normal here I guess. I just glued them on using the standard base, also did 4 to a base since I never saw the post about doing 3 and gaining one extra model! However I already have 12 scarab bases so I don't really need more (I think )

As for #/ base I didn't talk to any other necron players until my entire army was painted so I got 4/base, a couple broke off. I like the look of multiple models per base gives it a more swarmy feel.
