From Grax's post in another Thread:
So, anyone else out there been able to use Burna Boyz nicely in 5th Ed? Like Grax said, they are an Anti-Infantry unit, but we have better. The only thing I see them excelling at over the other AI units is Termie hunting. MANz are bad at this, Termies PW strike 1st and wipe out that nice 2+ save. Other units suffer due to the Termie 2+ save. So I do think that the Burnas make the best Termie Hunting unit (PWs and KMBs). Also, let us not forget the sheer fun in driving a BW up to a unit and dropping 15 flame templates on it
Not to pick on burna boyz, but I think killa kans are better at termie hunting. Three kans can shoot with kustom mega blastas first, killing 1 termie on average, and then in the assault they're armor 11, so the termies need either krak grenades (1 attack each, only hits on 5+) or powerfists. In the case of the fists, the kans go first with 9 attacks= 4.5 hits = 3.75 wounds= 2.5 kills.
That right there is probably most of the squad, or all but the leader...who will probably trash one or two of the kans, but the mecha-grots win on points, and by next round the enemy squad will probably be gone.
By comparison, 10 burna boyz will first get hit by the termies with about 12 attacks (assuming a 5 termie squad, with 1 powerfist)= 6 hits = 3 dead burnas. The 7 burnas then get 21 attacks = 10 hits = 5 wounds= 3.33 kills. The termie with powerfist then gets 2 attacks = 1 hit = 1 kill.
As you can see, the burnas might not have even won the combat. Also, counting their transport, they're way more expensive than the killa kans. Without a transport, those termies would have shot them to pieces before the burnas even got close.
Nah, I'm sticking with the kans.
Ah yes, Kans are a good call. The Termies I generally face though are a CSM squad of 10 with Flamer, Combi-Melta and no PF. Kans would feast on them, though he always DS's them and if he's smart he'll avoid the Kans. Though it would be fun when he Mishaps and I get to place them right next to my Kans, lol...
Once I paint up my mass of 50 or so Boyz I think my next project are some scratch built Kans
I think I'm going to convert my existing burnas into lootas. I'd get much more use out of another team of the all purpose fire squad, rather than the burnas. With the new rules, boyz and MANZ are simply better choices for close combat and anti-infantry. I'll still keep a couple burnas for the kommandos, but otherwise I'd rather convert them.
for the most part, all this is very true, but im thinking of making a flame tank with them, and see how well it does lol.
4 big shootas, 1 kannon(for eating weapon destroyed more than attacking but hey i got the option!"
Grot rigger ( don't want to get immoblised with a close range tank lol )
red paint job (SPEED!!)
a death roller and armor plates
with 8 burna boyz inside!!! oh yes.... the chaos... fun ^_^
not really cheap but yea... lol (280 points)
gonna be fun
You could always put them in a Looted Wagon with a Scorcha. Burna Heaven. . .
Hey, I'm known as Solitaire on the great Forum Heresy Online. Check it out sometime. . .
I could see using a small group in a looted wagon, and holding it back. 5-6 burnas in a looted wagon with a scorcha, for around 125-130 points isn't bad...but then again, there's probably better things to spend the points on, and it's adding 2 kill points to your list.
I wouldn't say they are as viable as other Elites, but Burnaz can be very useful. With cover so much more prevalent and totally up all template wounds before rolling saves, Burnaz decimate units at a time. Even 5-6 will cause upwards of 15 wounds on your average marine squad, and I don't even want to think about the havoc they an wreak on other horde armies.
Then you've got a whole unit with power weapons on the charge, though I wouldn't do it against marines as they can easily wipe the unit, or severely cripple it, before they can swing. Useful against Terminators though.
I'll be running a handful of burnaz in a skorcha wagon, very fluff, very burny, and potentially hilarious. It may not be the most effective choice but it is about as Orky as it gets

Mines are usualy good.
I field 9 of them accompanied by 3 mek with kustom mega blasta and I put them in a BattleWaggon with a boom gun.
First and second turn, I position my battlewaggon in order to get the maximum effect from the burna or mega blasta. They can fire from the side of the tank as it is open topped. On turn 3, they usualy are out of the tank and assaulting. Then, the boom gun start shooting. Sometimes, I don't move at all and shoot with the boom gun until ennemy on range and then I advance the burna to kill.

Only played with them once since 5th ed came out, and as it was a Dawn of War mission I resigned myself to them slowly plodding up the board and hopefully contesting an objective near the end.
However, after I offloaded a trukk mob on top of one objective I decided to play with the new uses for dedicated transports and presto! They charge up the field and completely mash a squad of marines waiting to pounce on an objective, picking up a Wierdboy along the way. Even better, once they massacre the tactical squad the Wierdboy decides to teleport them away, straight into a position to try and torch another unit. Sadly, their new target passed their morale check for casualties (but only due to Rites of Battle), otherwise the marines would have ended their game with no objectives at all...
"Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"
"Ha Ha Ha! Mine is an evil laugh... now DIE!"
