you're all probably sick of new ork players asking for advice, so sorry, but i really could use some help.
Basically what i have/ am getting is two sets of orks from assault on black reach and i want to know where to go from there.
i'm leaning towards a more horde-based army, but what do you think?
I'm in the same boat as you are. 2 sets of black reach orks. Just starting. Use ork newbies are going to be a popular breed soon! yay!
Me personally, I'm considering buying a box of the ork battleforce or two to get many many more boys, and the bikes and trukks.
However, I'm all ears if someone has some better options as I'm having a tough time convincing my better half that this is a wise investment!
In the borken record words of mynameisgrax "You need more Boyz"
A good starting base is 60 Boyz (either Slugga or Shoota pending on your army/playstyle). For a Horde army you'll need even more. Or you can mix in some speed/special units. Lootas are very popular and both Grax and I have come to adore Mega Armoured Nobz (they're so cute!).
From there it becomes a decision of army type/play style/personal preference/wallet size! Once you get a core going for a list I'd recommend reading through the codex and seeing what units stick out in your mind and go with it. Out of the entire Codex there are really only 3 units that many seem to shy away from. those are Flash Gitz, Burna Boyz and Deff Dreds. All 3 can certainly be used effectively and all 3 can be loads of fun. But from a competitive stand point there is generally something better. But as I said, its a lot of personal preference!
Monkey's Killer Kan WiP (Updated 4/29)
Monkeyclops is right on all points (especially about me telling you to get more boyz).
You need more boyz (see?). First figure out what your core troops are going to be (try to have at least 3-4), and then build the rest of your army around them. Games are primarily won or lost with your basic boyz, and that goes double with the new 'objective' focused missions. I'd start with either 3 units of 20+ boyz (each with nob, powerklaw and bosspole), or 4 units of trukks (either boyz or meganobz), or some combination of the two. 2 footsloggers (units on foot) and two trukks work nice, and so does one full unit of 30 footsloggers and three trukks. It's up to you.
I also highly recommend checking out the post me and some other players set up called 'the basics'. If you go to the main page and click on 'Ork Index 2008', you'll find it in there. It has a lot of good advice for beginners.
Besides that, I'd also get some of the loota/burna kits, combine them with a box of boyz, and make youself some special troops. I'd avoid burnas, and tankbustas need a transport to be effective, but lootas and kommandos work great in virtually any list. Don't throw the burna bits/backpacks away though. Make two kommandos with burnas, and use the rest to make more lootas!
In any case, good luck!
