Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am participating in a campaign at my local GW. It started off as 600pts, soon goes up to 800 and 1000 in a few more weeks.
I am putting together my 1000pt army and have about 160 pts left and I have to choose between Avatar and Banshees. The list cannot be changed after your first match and you cannot play different lists to accommodate your opponent, the majority of the players are SM or CSM with 2 more eldar, 1 IG and 1 Orks.
So I was wondering, with those rules in place and my possible opponents, would it be better to go for the banshees (6 inc. exarch with mirror swords, no transport) which is about 128 points and I can throw a few more guardians into my capping squad, maybe a warlock, or should I go for Avatar.
So far I have
Guardians (10 ) + Scatter Laser
Dark Reapers (5 inc Exarch)
Wraithlord + starcannon, Bright Lance and 2x flamers
Warwalker (2) + (both) dual scatter lasers

Avatar, Use him as a counter attack unit
Me, Ambivalent? Well, yes and no.
I would say that Banshees would be your best friend with those possible opponents. Not enough in your list would seem to benefit from the Avatar's fearless bubble and he will be targeted a lot. However, he could work as a durable fire magnet and a big punch if he makes it. Hard decision, but IMHO the Banshees would benefit you more. This could obviously go either way. Good luck regardless.

Meet My Autarch
I sort of feel like your better off with the Avatar, the amount of t4 opponent makes him feel like a better choice. Yes he will attract a lot of fire, but so will that wraithlord 2 MCs at 1000 points is pretty mean.
Rheagar fought nobly
Rheagar fought valiantly
Rheagar fought honorably
And Rheagar died.
i would say the avatar. i use him and he is defidently one of my best units. with good dice rolls(against most enemys you can get away with just average rolls) he can kill 6 enemys in a turn(wailing doom thrown and then his 4 base + 1 for charging), without taking a wound.
I vote avatar as well. The 6 banshee's without a transport are to soft a target. Should both get into melee they'll kill about the same with the banshee's surviving less. There is nothing wrong with letting an avatar be a fire magnet. IMO if he lasts more then two turns of this "attention" he was worth the points. A third option would be to take a second wraithlord. He can really tie up a SM or CSM or most any infantry unit in CC and they can't even hurt him with str less then 5.
