Welcome to Librarium Online!
In the past I was always a fan of Fireknives and Deathrains, but from what I understand, with 5th ed (which I haven't tried yet) cover is excessively abundant thus making the Fireknife less dependable at killing MEq's, and at the same time, the vehicle damage chart has been nerfed till Missile Pods are questionable against vehicles.
So, are these two builds are no longer as good as they were in the past (although I'm pretty sure people would still like the Deathrain) and what do you guys use nowadays?
The main issue I have with every other weapon besides the plasma and missile pod is the fact that they have really, really short range. Sure, Flamers do insane levels of damage (I've always liked template weapons since 3rd ed...autohitting templates are really good MEq killers) and Fusion Blasters are great against vehicles, but both are really really short ranged. The Cyclic Ion Blaster and Burst Cannon aren't too fancy IMO (the Tau army already has a lot of ways to kill weak infantry), and the Airbursting Fragmentation Projector has the risk of deviating so far off it doesn't hit anything.
Its almost like there aren't any choices out there anymore
Thanks for your time!
In 5th edition the best builds to me are still the Fireknife and Deathrain... I guess I don't understand what you think changed that so much.
No, the plasma rifle is not great at killing MEQ's in cover (but it wasn't in 4th ed either) - so you just shoot at ones not in cover or shoot at the ones in cover anyway because it is still the second best weapon for the job, second only to Missile Pods due to their range. (I say missile pods are better at killing MEQ's in cover, not ones out of cover obviously.)
And I really don't see how the missile pod got any less effective against vehicles. It's not like it's AP- or anything. It's good strength still makes it very effective at taking out AV 10-12 and it can still shake and stun AV13, this is the role it has always played. AV13 and 14 have always been better handled by the Rail Guns, and this is still true with 5th edition rules.

It's hard for me to stomach fielding any XV8 without a plasma rifle. You can pop a transport or, if you're really lucky, hit a vehicle on its rear armour, and it's reliable wounds on everything, even many monstrous creatures (excepting those cruddy daemons with 4+ or even 3+ invul saves). So long as my suits are carrying plasma rifles, the secondary weapon depends on taste, list build, and expected opponent. As about 90% of my opponents are marines of one stripe or another, I nearly always put missile pods on them. Great for infantry wounds and destroying light armour. Can't go wrong. Every list has at least one squad of 2 or 3 fireknives, all the way down to 1000 pts.
Been experimenting with a variant HQ build specifically tuned for infantry slaughter that I like a lot:
Shas'el, PR, CIB, TA, HWMT
Shas'vre, PR, AFP, MT
Shas'vre, PR, BC, MT
If I had more points, I'd add flamers on one or more of those suits for the 3rd hardpoint and use HWMTs instead. (Maybe turn the Shas'el into a Shas'o and give him a flamer instead of a TA.) But I never seem to have the points. I may sub out the burst cannon for the flamer, however, but it's just so handy against pure infantry lists ... especially the pair of ork players I face.
In theory, I really like deathrains, too, but I find that I never use them! I tend to think spending the extra points to get plasma rifles is worth the loss of twin-linking the missile pods. But they are quite efficient.

ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

MP's, BC's, or F's are the way to go in 5th, anything else an you are handicapping yourself.
What can you build with this?
Fireknife is still king for me. There is only so much cover available and getting those AP 2 shots is invaulable.
Do some research on the Firestorm and you will find out why it is part of the crisis trinity for a reason lol.
The trinity for me is:
Sure, that's four configs but they are some of the most effective combo's out there.
