So, I'm getting the Ork half of the Balck Reach box, and I have a great conversion idea in mind for turning the deffkoptas into warbikes (think bayou swamp racers ). What I'm wondering is what the general opinion is about the relative value of deffkoptas compared to bikes. Any thoughts?
Honestly, neither are great in groups of threes. For deffkoptas you really need 5, or else there's no point in running more than 1. Otherwise, a single casualty will send them running.
3 Warbikes have the same problem, although you could upgrade one to a nob with a bosspole, to help keep them in the game. Bikers are probably best in groups of 6 though, with a nob, bosspole and powerklaw.
If you're only planning to use 3, I'd go with the deffkoptas, simply because they can outflank. If your list doesn't have too many kill points, you could also run 1 or 2 by themselves, although 3 might be a bit much.

I was thinking that I'd run into a numbers problem with just 3, so I was expecting to pick up some more.

Just Wish Big Bombs were cheaper or part of their starting wargear and
that they have a crash chart (eg. Flying rotor blades). Oh well!
But I guess more boyz would suffice - Cheap as chips

I just want someone in my area to make a real horde army.
