Can Harlequins be taken in a DE army list?
(Before some of you lose your minds if they cannot be taken, please refer to the Title of this post)
I was wondering about this as well. After having read about them in the Eldar Codex, it would appear so. It says that they wander through the webway and sometimes go to Commorragh. The only caveat would be explaining why the Laughing God would command them to join in on a Dark Eldar slave raid.
Actually, you could technically include Rangers or even any other Eldar unit as long as you explain that they fell back into their hedonistic ways. That is how the Dark Eldar army was originally started, after all.
If you are entering a tournament, you should ask the host about what they will allow and what they won't in this regard.

The answer, from a legal viewpoint, is absolutely and utterly "no." The only Harlequins that can be taken in a Dark Eldar army are those that were included in GW's old Harlequin experimental rules (available via pdf from their webpage, or at least they used to be). The Harlequins from Codex: Eldar may not be chosen in a Dark Eldar army as... well, they are part of the Eldar codex, not part of the Dark Eldar codex.
Fluff does not dictate rules, so even if it makes sense from a fluff perspective, you cannot use it as a basis for adding rules.
Once the next Dark Eldar codex comes out (whenever that may be), there will likely be a Harlequins unit in it, but until then it is not legal to take Harlequins in a DE force.
Thank you, LN. I wasn't sure about how it was treated in a formal game setting, as I've never seen another DE player there. I might eventually toy around with the idea in friendly games, though.
As a side note, I personally have a vyper jetbike that my friends let me use cross-list- I have also been known to use it as a talos!
(*my ar/drachon is the troupe master- slightly modified of course!)
Cool, thanks for all the responses. It'd be awesome to see Harlequins added to the next codex revision. I heard on another forum that someone heard from a red shirt that GW is planning to release the new DE codex in time for Christmas.
Lets keep out fingers crossed
I've heard that too. I'm still a tad pessimistic for it though.
Don't get your hopes up about a release this Christmas. It's been almost confirmed that Space Marines and Imperial Guard will be the next 40k codices, with Space Wolves thrown in there somewhere. If you're looking at Christmas '09, that's much more reasonable.
